Nikhil’s wife Meena Karnik mentioned in an interview with a media that after completing college in 1981, she and her brother, who was also a journalist, joined the “Dinank” newspaper in Mumbai as reporters. She said Nikhil was the editor of the newspaper when she first met him.
In 1985, Nikhil Wagle married Meena Karnik, a journalist and media cell convener of the Aam Aadmi Party. The couple has a son named Parth Nikhil, who is a journalist.

Profession
After completing his formal education, he began working in the media as a freelance journalist in 1977. Thereafter, he joined Dinank, a Marathi news weekly in Mumbai, and started working as a reporter. After Dinank’s previous editor left in 1979, at the age of 19, he was promoted to editor-in-chief. Later, he became editor-in-chief of Dinank.
After leaving Dinank, Nikhil Vargel went to Pune and started working with Kirloskar Group which was publishing some magazines at that time. However, he quit his job after a month and returned to Mumbai. In 1982, he founded his own publishing house and launched a new magazine called Akshar.
Nikhil Wagle founded a sports magazine called Shatkar in 1983 and appointed former Indian cricketer Sandeep Patil as editor. In 1985, he founded a film and entertainment magazine called Chanderi. Initially, Rohini Hattangadi served as editor of Chanderi and later Gautam Rajadhyaksha took over the post.
At the same time, Nikhil Wagle also launched some Gujarati magazines. Wagle began hosting television shows in 1989. After doing some shows for Doordarshan, he started working for various private television channels, where he talked about social and political issues. He then hosted the famous talk show “Amne Samne”.
In 1990, he founded Mahanagar, a Marathi and Hindi newspaper. He became the editor of the Marathi version of Aapla Mahanagar.
In the mid-2000s, Wagle became the editor-in-chief of IBN Lokmat, a Marathi news channel owned by Network 18 Group. He hosted the show Aajcha Sawal but left in July 2014.
After leaving IBN-Lokmat, Nikhil Wagle became the Editor-in-Chief of Maharashtra1 News Channel. It is understood that many of his old colleagues have also joined the new channel. Later he merged the Marathi talk show Aajcha Sawal with Maharashtra 1. However, in November 2016, he resigned from his post in Maharashtra1.
Later, Wagle joined TV9 Marathi news channel on May 1, 2017 and started hosting a talk show called Sadetod. However, on July 20, 2017, Nikhil confirmed on his Twitter account that the channel had stopped airing the show.

Critics of Shiv Sena
In the 1990s, he became a critic of the Shiv Sena party and its leader Bal Thackeray. In 1991, it was reported that his office was frequently attacked by Shiv Sena supporters.

In 1994, Nikhil Wagle stirred controversy when he spoke out against some Maharashtra leaders who praised the late MLA, who was accused of having criminal links . His refusal to apologize for his remarks led to him being jailed for a week.
