Thereafter, he joined Dinank, a Marathi news weekly in Mumbai, and started working as a reporter. After Dinank’s previous editor left in 1979, at the age of 19, he was promoted to editor-in-chief. Later, he became editor-in-chief of Dinank.

After leaving Dinank, Nikhil Vargel went to Pune and started working with Kirloskar Group which was publishing some magazines at that time. However, he quit his job after a month and returned to Mumbai. In 1982, he founded his own publishing house and launched a new magazine called Akshar.

Nikhil Wagle founded a sports magazine called Shatkar in 1983 and appointed former Indian cricketer Sandeep Patil as editor. In 1985, he founded a film and entertainment magazine called Chanderi. Initially, Rohini Hattangadi served as editor of Chanderi and later Gautam Rajadhyaksha took over the post.
