Thanksgiving Weather Update: Will It Snow? Foul Forecast Looms Over Busy Travel Week

Some parts of the United States could experience a “White Thanksgiving” as wintry weather pushes the entire country into Thanksgiving week, which could cause “messy” travel, according to the National Weather Service Weather Center (WPC).

It’s likely to be a “wet” and “unsettled” Thanksgiving and holiday weekend for many, especially those on the East Coast, according to the WPC.

After a “brief period of freezing rain” moved through northern New England on the morning of Tuesday, November 26th, the National Weather Service (NWS) is predicting dry conditions to persist in the Northeast through the morning of Thursday, November 28th.

But wet weather will continue in the region late Thursday and last into Friday, which “could bring widespread wintry precipitation” to the area.

According to the WPC, the weather system “will bring widespread precipitation from the southeast to the northeast.” Parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast may see a mix of rain and snow, while cold rain is expected closer to the coast.

The highest chance for heavy, wet snow is in the higher elevations of the Adirondack Mountains, Green Mountains, White Mountains, and interior parts of Maine.

On the West Coast, heavy snow is “likely” at higher elevations through the morning of Wednesday, November 27. The WPC said total snow in the region could reach three feet, although some local areas could accumulate as much as six feet.

Meanwhile, forecasters said a low pressure system is currently moving across the Great Lakes into southern Canada that will “generate several inches of snow over Michigan’s Upper Peninsula” on Wednesday as well.

This weather system will push a cold front across the southern Plains and Southeast before returning north by midweek, “bringing the threat of record high temperatures across south central and southeast Texas,” according to the WPC.

The Midwest and Great Lakes will likely experience below-average temperatures, but will remain “seasonally cool.” Meanwhile, the WPC said warm temperatures are expected across Florida “for the foreseeable future.”

After the holidays, arctic air from the northern Rockies will move east, bringing “some of the coldest air of the season so far.”

It will also create “favorable conditions for significant lake-effect snow” east and southeast of the Great Lakes. Travel disruptions are likely between Cleveland, Ohio and Syracuse, NY

Parts of the upper Midwest could experience “dangerously cold wind chill” from the combination of wind and cold temperatures, with highs in the single digits in some areas “presenting an increased risk of hypothermia” for those outside.
