Woman Allegedly Killed L.A. Social Activist Because He Was Friends with a Woman She Was Stalking: Police

Prominent social justice advocate Michael Latt was killed by a woman who targeted him because he was friends with a woman she was stalking, prosecutors said Thursday.

The 33-year-old CEO of Lead With Love was shot and killed at his residence in the Mid-Wilshire area of ​​Los Angeles during a home invasion Monday night, the Los Angeles Police Department said. Jameelah Elena Michl, 36, was arrested at the property and charged on suspicion of murder.

She has since been charged with shooting and killing Latto, Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón’s office said in a news release Thursday. The LAPD investigated the case, the district attorney’s office said.

“On Nov. 27, Michl allegedly went to the victim’s residence in the 900 block of Alandale Avenue after she targeted him because he was friends with the woman she was stalking,” the statement said.

“She allegedly knocked on the door and forced her way into the house after one of the residents opened it. Michl, who was allegedly armed with a semi-automatic handgun, shot and killed the victim inside the home,” the district attorney’s office continued.

Gascón mourned the loss of “a passionate advocate who believed in the principles of justice and equality within our criminal justice system.”

“We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time,” Gascón said. “The violence that has occurred is not only an affront to the values ​​we hold, but a powerful reminder of the need to address the wider issues that contribute to such heartbreaking incidents.”

Her hearing is scheduled for Dec. 15 at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Center for Criminal Justice. If convicted as charged, Michl faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. Prosecutors recommended that she be held on $3 million bail.

It is not clear whether Michl has hired a lawyer.

The police also state that during the burglary, another person was present in the apartment, apart from the helper.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of the victims and we will work tirelessly to ensure that justice is served for this heinous crime,” Gascón said.

Latt is the son of Hollywood producers David Latt and Michelle Satter and the brother of Creative Arts agency agent, Los Angeles Times reported.

According to his company’s website, Latt has collaborated with artists, brands and organizations such as Common, Ryan Coogler, Netflix, Sundance Film Festival, ARRAY Ave DuVernay, UCLA and more.

Michl was charged with one count of murder and one count of first-degree burglary of a dwelling with a person present.

The victim’s family also expressed their sadness, remembering him as a person who spent his time helping others.

“Our beloved son Michael Latt was the victim of a tragic act of violence this week,” Satter wrote in the post on X (formerly Twitter). “Michael has dedicated his career to supporting artists, advocating for organizations that elevate artists of color, and harnessing storytelling for lasting change. We celebrate his legacy, love and compassion.”
