Nitin Gadkari has been interested in politics since childhood. He joined the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in 1976. His active participation in the college elections resulted in the ABVP winning all the seats in the student body of Nagpur University. In 1981, Gadkari organized the 28th National Congress of the ABVP and was elected president of the Nagpur Bharatiya Janata Party (BJYM). In 1990, he was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council from the graduates constituency. In 1995, he was appointed Minister, Public Works Department (PWD), Government of Maharashtra. He served as MLC for four consecutive terms from 1990 to 2008. In 1996, he became the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council.

In 2004, he was appointed Chairman of the Maharashtra Bharatiya Janata Party. In December 2009, Gadkari was appointed national chairman of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was appointed Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways in the Narendra Modi government.

After the death of Union Minister Gopinath Munde in September 2017, Gadkari was appointed as the head of the Ministries of Shipping and Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation. On May 31, 2019, he assumed office as the Union Minister of the Ministry of Road Transport, Highways and Shipping and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

  • In November 2011, the body of a young girl was found in Gadkari’s car. Upon investigation, it was discovered that it was the daughter of his house cleaner. The girl’s family claimed she was beaten and murdered; she had 19 injuries on her body. Doctors said she died of suffocation as she was unable to get out of the car, and that the marks on her body were not signs of beating. The girl’s family accused Gadkari of using his position to influence doctors and police as no action was taken against Gadkari.

  • In 2014, before the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the Election Commission issued a show-cause notice to him. The notice asked him to clarify remarks he made at a rally asking voters to accept bribes from other parties to lure them and then vote for the party they wanted.
