Noam Chomsky, Linguist and Thought Leader, Hospitalized in Brazil After Stroke

Linguist and activist Noam Chomsky has been hospitalized in Brazil while recovering from a stroke he suffered a year ago, his wife has confirmed.

The 95-year-old was taken to a hospital in São Paulo in his wife’s native country after suffering a massive stroke in June 2023, his wife Valeria Chomsky told The Associated Press via email on Wednesday, June 12. Valeria said her husband was flown to São Paulo when he could travel more easily from the US

She also confirmed to a Brazilian newspaper the details of Chomsky’s move to hospital, Folha de S. Paulowho were the first to report the news on Monday, June 10.

According to the newspaper, Valeria decided to bring her husband to São Paulo, where the couple has resided since 2015, in an attempt to speed up his recovery with modified treatment after the stroke left him “difficult to speak and the right side of his body went numb.”

Chomsky was treated by local doctors in Arizona, where he and his wife live, and given medication and intravenous feedings that were eventually “minimized,” according to the outlet.

After seeing her husband gradually regain consciousness and communicate with less difficulty, Valeria rushed him to a Brazilian hospital in an ambulance with two nurses and he was admitted to intensive care, the newspaper said.

Chomsky’s condition has since improved significantly and he is now out of intensive care, according to the outlet. The 95-year-old is being visited daily by a neurologist, a speech therapist and a lung specialist as he continues his recovery, according to the AP.
