Olivia Wilde Says Her 2 Kids Are 'Begging' Her to Make a Non-R-Rated Film So They Can Watch (Exclusive)

Olivia Wilde talks about being both a mother and a director.

Speaking at an event on Wednesday 8 May promoted by Baby2Baby, Don’t worry dear the director, 40, tells PEOPLE exclusively that her two children are “begging me to do something that’s not R-rated.”

Of all her directorial efforts, including the three she’s working on now, “I have one right now that they can see,” Wilde says with a laugh. With only one age-appropriate option, her son Otis Alexander, 10, and Daisy Josephine, 7, she says, “were like, ‘Mom, this is irresponsible!’”

Wilde’s upcoming projects in pre-production as a director are Avengelyne, The Wicked and Perfect.

“The next few projects I’m leading have a common theme, which is women living without shame,” she tells PEOPLE. “It’s interesting – they’re three very different films, but they’re all about empowering women.”

Her two children, who she shares with ex Jason Sudeikis, will eventually be allowed to see all of Wilde’s work on screen and behind the camera. “I think about the effect they have on my children,” she says of her projects.

“In the end, I want them to learn from me that everything you do in life is a learning process,” she continues. “I wouldn’t be the director I am today if I hadn’t done all the things I did. I try to encourage them all the time: you don’t have to feel like everything is the best thing you’ve ever done.”

Daisy “wants to be a director, which is so cool,” adds Wilde. “She loves music videos. And I grew up loving music videos, but we had MTV and VH1 all day long.”

The mother-daughter duo, Wilde recalls, “sit and study direction, like Dua Lipa, Taylor [Swift]Billie [Eilish]Olive [Rodrigo], and then directed her own videos. And then we cut them together.”

When asked if Wilde ever appears in Daisy’s home movies, she laughs. “No no no. She would criticize my choreography too much.”

Wilde appeared alongside Kelly Rowland and Ciara at Baby2Baby’s Los Angeles headquarters to promote the nonprofit’s kit expansion for maternal and newborn health. Baby2Baby helps the welfare of women and children in poverty with diapers, clothes and basic necessities.

The Booksmart director tells PEOPLE she will be bringing her kids to volunteer at the nonprofit.

“They’re at an age now where they can understand a little more context around why we should be doing this and they know how lucky they were, but how they can now use their luck to dedicate their time,” she says.

“For kids, volunteering is such an exciting way to feel their own beneficial power and influence,” adds Wilde. “In the winter, I went around with my mom delivering meals with Meals on Wheels in Washington, DC. . . And those memories are really formative for me.”
