The knife attack occurred on Saturday around 4 pm in the town of Mulhouse, on the border with Germany.
The suspect is believed to be a 37-year-old Algeria, which is listed in the file to report to the prevention of terrorist radicalization, according to French media.
He allegedly shouted “Allah Akbar” during the horror who killed Spree, according to Le Parisien and Le Figaro.
French President Emmanuel Macron has since told reporters: “It’s an Islamist terrorist act – it’s undoubtedly.”
Macron added that special prosecutors are now leading an investigation into the attack.

Another man – who is believed to be a police officer – is currently in intensive care after suffering injuries to his chest, local media reports.
The second municipal police and two parking control officers also remained with minor injuries.

Mayor Mulhouse Michele Lutz paid tribute to courageous officers and said, “The horror seized our city.”
French Prime Minister Françoise Bayrou also said on X: “Fanaticism hit again and we are in mourning.
“My thoughts naturally go to victims and their families, and a firm hopes that the wounded will recover.
“Congratulations to the police at a quick intervention.”
The investigative source spoke about the horrors and claimed that the man was supposed to attend a nearby police station before he performed the attack.
They said: “The man attended the police station to sign his court control form associated with his home custody.
“He refused to do so and instead attacked numerous people with a knife. They were injured included at least three municipal police officers.”
Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is expected to visit the city later tonight.
Armed soldiers and special forces police secured the Square on which the attack took place.
