One-Third of Oscars 2024 Nominees Are Women, Despite Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie’s Barbie Omissions

Those who are disappointed by two significant Oscars in 2024 Barbie snubs might find some encouraging news in the full list of nominees.

About one-third of the list of nominees announced on Tuesday is made up of women, a higher share than in the last three years. And of the 22 categories, 18 contain at least one candidate from an underrepresented group.

They are not included in Best Actress or Best Director Barbie star and director Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, but both are up for an Oscar, as the film is nominated for Best Picture.

In addition to playing Barbie, Robbie, 33, is also a co-producer, as is Gerwig, 40. The two join seven other women competing for an Oscar in the coveted category.

Nomination of Justine Triet for the best director (Anatomy of a Fall) marks the fifth year in a row that at least one film nominated for best film was directed by a woman.

Other notable women competing at this year’s Academy Awards include two nominees for Best Editing (Thelma Schoonmaker and Jennifer Lame), one for Best Original Score (Laura Karpman), one for Best Visual Effects (Kiyoko Shibuya), one for Best Adapted Screenplay ( Gerwig) and three for best original screenplay (Triet, Samy Burch and Celine Song).

Especially, Killers of the Flower Moon Best Actress hopeful Lily Gladstone is the first Indian actress to be nominated for an Oscar. Two other women of color were nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category: Danielle Brooks (Purple) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers).

Triet, 45, is the eighth woman to be nominated in the best director category (only three have won: Jane Campion in 2021, Chloé Zhao in 2020 and Kathryn Bigelow in 2009).

However, the exclusion of Gerwig and Robbie from individual director and actor categories at the upcoming ceremony drew criticism from cast members America Ferrer and Ryan Gosling, who were nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.

After the nominations were announced, Gosling, 43, issued a strong statement of support for her and Gerwig. “To say I’m disappointed they weren’t nominated in their categories would be an understatement,” he said of the pair.

“Against all odds, with just a couple of soulless, scantily clad and, thankfully, no groin puppets, they made us laugh, broke our hearts, pushed culture and made history,” Gosling continued. “Their work should be recognized along with other very deserving candidates.”

While the father of two added that he himself was “extremely honored to be nominated” in the best supporting actor category, Gosling said that “there is no Ken without Barbie”. And there isn’t Barbie a movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.”

He then called Gerwig and Robbie “the two people most responsible for this globally acclaimed, history-making film.”

Ferrera, 39, said Diversity that she “was incredibly disappointed that they weren’t nominated,” and shared in a statement to PEOPLE that Gerwig and Robbie “made history and raised the bar with Barbie.”

As for Robbie, Ferrera added in her comments to the paper that what she accomplished as an actress was “really incredible” in the film, saying, “One of the things about Margot as an actress is how easy she makes everything look. And maybe they people tricked into thinking the job looks easy.”
