Only Copy of Ultra-Rare Wu-Tang Clan Album Once Upon a Time in Shaolin to Go on Display

Wu-Tang Clan fans rejoice!

The coveted seventh album of the cult hip-hop group Once upon a time in Shaolin will be on public display for the first time at the Tasmanian Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) in Australia, the gallery announced in a press release.

The Wu-Tang Clan secretly recorded the legendary record for six years, and only one physical copy of the two CDs was made and sold at auction in 2015, making it one of the most expensive records ever sold.

That copy will now go on display at the Namedropping exhibition, which runs for 10 days from 15 June at the Mona Gallery, which showcases and examines the work and status of some of the world’s most prolific artists and musicians.

“Every once in a while an object on this planet possesses mystical properties that transcend its material circumstances,” said Jarrod Rawlins, director of curatorial affairs at Mona, according to the release. “Once upon a time in Shaolin is more than just an album, so when I thought about status and what a transcendent namedrop could be, I knew I had to put it in this exhibition.”

Fans will also get the chance to listen to the uber-exclusive Wu-Tang Clan record at listening parties held at Mona’s Frying Pan Studios, along with a select thirty-minute mix from the album during a limited showcase.

“Ten years ago, Wu-Tang Clan had the bold vision to make a single copy album as a work of art. “To put it in an art gallery … to make music a living piece like the Mona Lisa or the scepter of Egypt,” Pleasr said in a statement.

“With this unique piece of art, Wu-Tang Clan’s intention was to redefine the meaning of music ownership and value in a world of digital streaming and music commodification. Pleasr is honored to partner with Mona to support RZA’s vision for Once upon a time in Shaolin.”

Wu-Tang Clan’s album showcase comes as the legendary group embarks on a new chapter in their career after kicking off a Las Vegas residency in February. The group performed their first shows at the Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas during Super Bowl weekend.

Namedropping the Wu-Tang Clan will take place twice a day, Friday through Monday, between June 15th and 24th. Mona will issue a limited number of free tickets for each event.
