Outlander star’s new BBC drama is all about Viagra – get the details

The new series should focus on five Welshmen who took part in a medical trial of a new drug that would later become Viagra. The true story follows the group at Swansea’s Morriston Hospital in 1994 – and will premiere on BBC One later in 2023.

So who will star? The show has some seriously famous cast, including Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon, Dunkirk’s Aneurin Barnard and The Witcher 3 actor Paul Rhys. The series will also see a reunion of Gavin and Stacey cast members Joanne Page and Steffan Rhodri, who also star.

The synopsis for the fictionalized series reads: “Meurig (Iwan Rheon) longs for intimacy with his wife, Ffiona (Alex Roach). He loves her with all his heart, but feels trapped by his inability to rekindle the spark in their marriage. He’ll do anything to rekindle the flame Everything but talking to her.

“There’s Tommy (Paul Rhys), a gay man who desperately lies about his sexuality because the trial is rigged for heterosexual sex. Encouraged by his friend and nurse Moira Davies (Joanna Page), how far will his lies go to uncover Colin (Steffan Rhodri) alive living an isolated life solving crossword puzzles after his wife’s death.

“He thinks he’s found the one in Teresa (Lisa Palfrey), his Lonely Hearts phone friend. But when she asks to meet in person, fear sets in. It’s been so long since he’s been with a woman. What if she wants to consume their started a romance?”

And what about Mark’s character? The Outlander star plays Eddie, who is described as “a strong man on the surface, but there’s a vulnerability beneath the surface”.

The synopsis concludes: “Men Up explores the fragility of our characters in search of their ultimate reward…the return of romantic connection to their lives. But as drugs bring hope back to that once-lost intimacy, the people realize that the hard work has only just begun. The trial will take them to some very unexpected places and force them to rethink their lives.”
