Longtime best friends Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are back!

17 years after their iconic reality show in the 2000s A simple life ended, the duo reunited on screen in a three-part series, Paris & Nicole: Encore, which premiered on the Peacock on December 12.

Richie tells PEOPLE that they’ve had multiple requests for a reunion over the years, but now “was the right time.”

In their new series Peacock, the two, both 43-year-old mothers of two, go far outside their comfort zones by staging an opera based on the nonsensical song “Sanasa,” which they invented as childhood friends.

Richie admits that the idea of ​​turning “Sanasa” into an opera “started as a joke, and then it got very serious, very quickly.”

“We definitely had moments during filming where the clock was just ticking and we were doing everything we wanted to do on the show and going to Arkansas and going here and going there,” she explains. “But the clock was ticking and time was running out, and we definitely had some moments of really sitting down where we’d be on the phone at 9:00, 10:00 at night and ask, ‘How are we going to do this?'”

During the new series, the duo returns to Arkansas, where they lived during the episode A simple life which sent Los Angelenos to the Midwest to live on farms and try their hand at blue-collar work.
