Patricia Jaggernauth, the host of CP24, has filed a human rights lawsuit against Bell Media, alleging that she was subjected to racism, misogyny and discrimination during her 11 years working for the network.
Jaggernauth, 40, began working for Bell Media in June 2011 as a meteorologist and Live Eye host for CP24 Breakfast, covering local events. The Patricia J Show, a celebrity and lifestyle chat show, debuted on Bell Fibe TV1 in 2017.
The presenter, who is Guyanese/Jamaican, complained to the Canadian Human Rights Commission on Wednesday, a day after she reported on CP24. She said that she was denied a promotion because of her race and that she never got a full-time job. Furthermore, she claims that last summer Bell was prevented from earning a decent income.
Jaggernauth claimed in an exclusive interview with CBC News that she was ultimately exhausted by the unpredictable nature of her workweek, in which she was often called upon to step in for other hosts, leading to frenzied turnarounds. This resulted in a hospitalization due to the 2019 virus and three months of unpaid sick leave.
When you apply for a job and you’re overqualified, how often do you hear, “You are the fabric that makes this place what it is, but we’re going in a different direction,” according to Jaggernauth?
“I applied for all the positions. More than 10 or 11 times, I lost count. She said, ‘I’m always good enough to support her, but never good enough to invest in her.’
Jaggernauth, a 2006 Seneca College broadcast journalism student, grew up in Scarborough. He began his career as an intern at ET Canada, Flow 93.5 and Canadian Idol. She then hosted and wrote shows on the short-lived specialty dance channel bpm.tv and GlassBox’s BITE TV, on which she was the main host, as she won the 2008 Emmy for Outstanding Interactive Digital Cable Channel. She then came on the game show Brain Battle on Global TV and NiteLife TV on Citytv. Jaggernauth also owns and operates PJ Glam Girl, an online personal clothing store.
