Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce are both football players and mind readers.
As the defending Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs running back and tight end have an undeniable rapport on the field — a bond that many have described as telepathic, whether they’re fans of the team or not.
When asked by PEOPLE about their on-field communication during Thursday’s Super Bowl press conference in Las Vegas, both Mahomes and Kelce explained the verbal and non-verbal lines they use to score points during games.
“I think it’s just been a lot of work, so there are some things that don’t need to be said,” Kelce, 34, responded while speaking to reporters. “But at the same time, there are little pieces of communication that can reassure you and make sure we’re both on the same page sometimes.”

Kelce further explained that their strategy varies depending on the situation.
“Everything we do on the field is play-specific and it really depends on what the handoff is and the things the other team plays,” he said of his plays with Mahomes, 28. “It really just depends on the scenario.”
“I’ve been fortunate to be able to grow in this offense with a big guy,” added Kelce — who helped lead the Chiefs to a victory against the Baltimore Ravens during the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 28, securing the team’s fourth Super Bowl berth since 2019 .

During Mahomes’ press conference, PEOPLE asked the same question — although they specifically asked about Kelce’s quote regarding “things that don’t need to be said.”
“We think on the same wavelength about a lot of things,” Mahomes told reporters when asked about his telepathic connection with Kelce. “We have a lot of similar hobbies, similar interests and that carries over to the football field.”
Mahomes explained, “A lot of times it can be something that we haven’t talked about and he kind of works and I just know he’s going to do it — and so, it comes with a lot of repetition.”
He continued, “A lot of times it’s just hanging out and learning about football, about each other and what we do and having success on the football field.”

Mahomes confirmed that sometimes the words “safe” don’t need to be used on the field. “Being able to be on the same wavelength as someone else,” he said, “breeds more success” in all aspects of life, both on and off the court.
For Mahomes and Kelce in particular, the QB said being on the same wavelength with the star tight end is “something we’ve done throughout our careers.”
On Sunday, the Chiefs will return to the Super Bowl to defend their title against the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. A Chiefs victory would mark the third title for both Mahomes and Kelce.
