News about Paul Henri Nargeolet
The crew of a lost submarine en route to the North Atlantic wreck site of the RMS Titanic has been found to include a former French navy captain and veteran diver known as ‘Mr Titanic’.
The famous French diver nicknamed “Mr. Titanic” was a passenger on the missing submarine.
Explorer Paul-Henry Nargeolet, 77, has made at least 35 trips to the location of the famous passenger ship that sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage.
According to Nargeolet’s representative, one of the five people aboard the 21-meter OceanGate Expeditions submersible who lost communication Sunday morning while diving at the wreck site 12,500 feet below the ocean’s surface was a known scuba diver.
As search and rescue teams continue to work in a race against time to find the missing sub, Mathieu Johann, a spokesman for Nargeolet, told the BBC he hoped the crew of the missing sub would be comforted by the calm and military pedigree of Nargeolet.
Nargeolet is traveling on the missing OceanGate Expeditions submarine with British citizen millionaire Hamish Harding, British businessman Shahzad Dawood and their son Suleman.
The Titanic was discovered by an expedition led by oceanographer Robert Ballard two years earlier, according to The Telegraph, and Nargeolet was part of the first human team to investigate the disaster site.
“It was absolutely incredible,” Nargeolet said in a 2012 Forbes interview about his first sighting of a sunken passenger ship while on a manned submarine.
“Almost everyone is talking and there is noise from the subs. But when we got closer to the bow, everyone went quiet and the sub was completely silent,” Nargeolet recalled at the time. I felt amazed. Nargeolet claimed that as he looked at the wreckage of the Titanic, he “could almost see people walking on the deck.”
Additionally, Forbes reports that Nargeolet and his colleagues used sonar and more than 130,000 images obtained from robot-operated underwater devices to map a 3-by-5-mile area of the Titanic’s debris field for the first time.
In an interview with the Irish Examiner in 2019, Nargeolet warned against deep diving and visiting the Titanic site, saying: “You’re dead before you know something’s up.”
“If something bad happens, whether you’re 11 meters or 11 kilometers, the result is the same,” Nargeolet said at the time. It’s just not a problem when you’re in really deep water because you’ll be dead before you know what’s going on.
