Peaky Blinders Movie: Everything the Cast Has Said About the Upcoming Film

Hit series Peaky Blinders may have ended in 2022, but fans will still have the chance to return to the world of Tommy Shelby.

The Steven Knight-created drama is set in Birmingham, England and follows the Shelby family who ran a criminal enterprise that established itself as a major player in the city’s illegal betting and bootlegging after World War I.

The series ran for six seasons and starred Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby, the leader of the Peaky Blinders. He was joined in the cast by, among others, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, Finn Cole, Tom Hardy and Anya Taylor-Joy.

Now, Peaky Blinders gets the film treatment and Knight talks Diversity 2021 that the film is in “development”. He added: “It’s a fully formed idea and it has a beginning, middle and end. And I think it will be a fitting conclusion to the story told so far.”

In March 2024, Knight provided another exciting update for the Peaky Blinders fans, telling Birmingham World that filming will begin in September. In June, Netflix confirmed the film was on the way, sharing a photo of the script on X (formerly Twitter).

Despite his busy schedule, Knight remains committed to creating Peaky Blinders movie. In 2022, when he spoke with Breakfast in the heart podcast, Knight said he’s almost finished writing the script for the film, saying, “Yeah, I’m writing it right now. I’m almost done writing it and we’re going to shoot it… I’m setting up some film and television studios in Digbeth, Birmingham.”

In the same year, Knight and the Peaky Blinders cast did a group interview with Esquire give an oral history of the series. During the interview, Knight said that the new cast members who joined the show in Season 6 will be integral to the potential plot of the film.

“We’re bringing in a new generation in the sixth series and they’re going to be part of what happens in the film,” Knight said. “I think it’s finding those actors that you just look at and think, there you go. That’s where the future is.”

In 2023, he gave even more details about the film, telling Radio Times that the action is set during World War II and that the audience should “expect the unexpected”.

Later that year, Knight said Radio Times magazine, he was “just working on the final pieces” and planned to start filming in mid-2024. It seems his timeline wasn’t too far off, as when he spoke to Birmingham World in March 2024, he said they were on track to start shoot in the fall.

“We’re shooting it in September a little down the road in Digbeth,” he said.

From the end Peaky BlindersMurphy has occasionally discussed returning to his memorable character — but only if it felt right.

“If there’s more to the story, I’d love to do it. But it has to be right,” said the Oscar winner Rolling Stone in May 2023 “Steve Knight wrote 36 hours of television and we left on such a high. I’m really proud of that last series. So it would have to feel legitimate and justified to do more.”

A few months later, Murphy again commented on the rumored project, saying Radio Times magazine in July 2023, “It’s probably the worst thing Peaky Blinders – they keep asking me about the film!”

He continued: “I would love to make a film if there is still a story to tell. I’ll wait and see, but I don’t have any news on that.”

Murphy’s role in the film was confirmed in March 2024, when Knight told the Birmingham World that the actor was “definitely coming back for her”.

When Netflix confirmed that a Peaky Blinders movie is coming, the streamer shared Murphy’s quote in a post on X.

“It seems Tommy Shelby isn’t done with me… It’s a great pleasure to work with Steven Knight and Tom Harper again on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is for the fans,” he said.

Sophie Rundle joked that she would be the “last” to know about the film

In the series, actress Sophie Rundle played Ada Thorne, Tommy’s sister. 2023, when he was filming Netflix Diplomatthe actress was asked if she knew anything about the potential Peaky Blinders author’s film Radio Times.

“I’m not,” the actress replied, explaining, “but the actors are really the last people to be told anything because we sit here and then we tell you. There are rumors, who knows? I think the appetite for it will be created by the fans, I guess.”

Joining Peaky Blinders during the series’ fifth season in 2018, Sam Claflin played Oswald Mosley, a politician who became one of the main antagonists against the Shelby family.

During the performance at Watch what’s happening live In 2023, an audience member asked Claflin if he had any information about the rumors Peaky Blinders movie.

“I don’t know anything,” answered the actor. “I believe that this is happening, I personally did not receive an invitation. I’d love to revisit that character… that’s literally all I can say, unfortunately.”

Actress Kate Phillips played Linda Shelby, ex-wife of Tommy’s brother Arthur. When you talk to Radio Times In 2022, Phillips spoke about the series finale, saying it was “absolutely stunning and felt so devastating and surprising.”

As for whether she would be interested in joining the cast of a potential film, Phillips replied, “Sure, hell yeah, I’d be thrilled if Steven Knight wanted to bring Linda into the movie. Yes, please!”

The knight introduces new characters

While several original cast members are expected to be a part of the film, Knight has also recruited new faces.

In July 2024. The Hollywood Reporter announced that DuneRebecca Ferguson would join the cast. SaltburnBarry Keoghan followed soon after.
