He is believed to have died after a battle with cancer.

Frontman Ian Brown paid tribute to the rocker today.

Brown wrote: “Yes, very sad. We were young punks when we met in 1977.

“The night before Pete’s maths and geography O levels we went to see the Clash.

“He always made me laugh when he did that and of course he made the right decision!”

He added: “Few loved music like Pete.

“He’s been bathing in music since Anarchy in the UK came out.

“I can vouch for that, and Pete was unsurpassedly nice, old-fashioned nice that you can’t get anymore!

“He got that from his lovely mum! GOD Bless Pete RIP.”

Garner met Brown and guitarist John Squire at school – and they played together in the band The Patrol until 1980.

Three years later they formed The Stone Roses together with Andy Couzens on rhythm guitar and Simon Wolstencroft on drums.

They played their first show in October 1984, and released their debut single in 1984.

However, after the release of their second single Sally Cinnamon in 1987, Garner left the band to work for HMV.

In 1989, the band released their debut album, The Stone Roses, which was hailed by many as one of the greatest British albums ever recorded.
