Peter Dinklage had a much better relationship with his off-screen Game of Thrones costar Charles Dance than he had on screen.
The actor (55) appeared in the last episode of the series Hot one on Thursday, Oct. 17, and talked about his time on the HBO fantasy show and the friendships he made with his co-stars.
The four-time Emmy winner explained to host Sean Evans how much he values his friendship with his on-screen father, Dance. Dinklage played Tyrion Lannister and Dane, 78, played Tywin Lannister.
Evans, 38, asked if it was true that Dance was “so disgusted” by the way Tywin treated Tyrion that he “made a habit” of apologizing to Dinklage during filming.

“I love Charlie Dance, he’s one of my favorite human beings,” Dinklage began. The actor explained that Dance’s character only “humiliated me” and ultimately condemned Tyrion to death. Before detailing the interactions, Dinklage credited their emotional performances to “great dialogue.” GoT creators Dan Weiss and David Benioff. “It really felt like living.”
“We would really invest in those things,” he said. “Just like between every shoot, he would come over and gently tap me on the shoulder.” Dinklage said they didn’t have time to “hug,” but the interaction “was also very paternal.”
“But he played a horrible human being, but he’s one of my favorite human beings,” the actor told Evans.

Ahead of the third season finale in March 2013, Dance spoke to NME and praised Dinklage. The veteran actor admitted that he is constantly apologizing to his colleague. “I spend a lot of time with Peter Dinklage and he’s the sweetest man, a wonderful actor,” Dance said at the time.
“After all those scenes, I apologize to him every time. I have to treat him like a s—. You only saw a small fraction of the horror in the first episode.”
