In the two-hour special, Phil reveals how years of pounding away at drum sets took a physical toll on his body.

The In The Air Tonight singer’s hands, feet and body have suffered from decades of entertaining audiences.

Phil said: “If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I’m going to be pissed.

“But I feel like I used up my air miles.

“It’s still kind of sinking in a little bit.

“I spent my whole life playing drums.

“It’s a shock that all of a sudden I can’t do it.

“If I can’t do what I’ve been doing as well as I’ve been doing, I’d rather just relax and do nothing.”

During the special called Phil Collins: Drummer First, viewers will also hear from his son Nick, who now plays with Genesis.

He says frankly that his dad had “major neck surgery from all those years of playing drums and bad posture.”

Over the years, Phil suffered an injured vertebra in his upper neck which led to nerve damage.

He caused concern among fans during his last appearance at Genesis in March 2022 when he performed in a wheelchair.

Genesis guitarist and bassist Mike Rutherford said last year: “As you know, Phil is a bit… He’s a lot more mobile than he used to be, which is a shame, but he was in good spirits on tour.

“Now he is well at home, enjoying life.

“He has worked so hard over the years.

“I think he’s enjoying himself at home.”

Phil is the father of five children, including Emily In Paris star Lily Collins.
