Phil Scott’s career
According to Phil’s business career, after graduating from high school, Scott started working at DuBois Construction, a Middlesex company founded by his uncle. Scott joined the company as a co-owner in 1986. Scott was president of Vermont Associated General Contractors. A fire at DuBois Construction on January 6, 2012 caused significant damage, but the owners were able to rebuild and resume operations. Scott sold his share of the company after he was elected governor to avoid any conflict of interest, since DuBois Construction does business with the state of Vermont. He sold his 50% stake for $2.5 million plus 3% interest paid over 15 years. Scott stated that in order to protect the company’s ability to merge, he decided to finance the sale himself rather than have the company borrow money to pay him in full. Critics argued that Scott’s sale of part of his company did not fully eliminate potential conflicts of interest, but Scott and the lawyer who arranged the sale on his behalf disagreed.
