ITV announced in a new statement that it would conduct an outside review of Phillip Schofield’s departure from This Morning.
Following Schofield’s departure from ITV last week, Chief Executive Dame Carolyn McCall wrote a letter to Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer, DCMS Committee Chair Dame Caroline Dinenage and Ofcom CEO Dame Melanie Dawes, which was obtained by the PA news agency.
After admitting to a “unwise but not illegal” romance with a younger male colleague, Schofield, 61, resigned from the broadcaster on Friday and was dumped by his talent agency YMU. According to Dame Carolyn, the man was hired as a runner when he was 20 years old.
Following what Dame Carolyn claims has been “a lot of inaccuracy” in reporting, the letter goes on to clarify the facts. She also noted that the former employee with whom Schofield admits having an affair has been offered support throughout.
The statement read: “The ITV employee was 20 years old when he applied for and was hired as a runner on the show. He was 19 years old when he initially completed work experience at This Morning in 2015.
He then submitted an application and was accepted for a promotion to Loose Women in 2019. In 2021, he departed ITV. We have given him our support during this time, and we still do, as you might expect given the social media shaming of him.
The worker has made it plain that he doesn’t want to be named or identified in relation to this case. We would appreciate it if you could keep this in mind.
As stated in the letter, “significant media coverage concerning Phillip Schofield” has received attention. It continues, “As you would expect, we take the matter extremely seriously and have reviewed our own records over the weekend.”
It claims that ITV documents demonstrate that the network looked into the claims that Phillip Schofield was dating an ITV employee when they first surfaced in late 2019 or early 2020.
“When questioned at the time, YMU, Phillip’s then-agency, and both parties firmly and again rejected the rumours. ITV also contacted with other members of the This Morning and larger Daytime crew, but received no information about any link other than hearsay and rumours.
We kept asking both sides questions in light of the persistent accusations, and they both continued to refute the rumours, even as recently as this month.
