Dave Grohl was scheduled to perform at Boygenius’ Grammy-nominated event record — but then he fell asleep.
In a new interview with NMEboygenius members Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker talked about performing their song “Satanist” live with the Foo Fighters frontman at a recent show, revealing that he overslept beforehand and missed a scheduled recording session with the band.
Before Grohl, 54, joined the band on stage at the Hollywood Bowl for Halloween, he had previously formed a friendship with Bridgers, 29, she explained to the paper.

“I became friends with Dave backstage at a Billie Eilish show. He’s the coolest guy ever. I’ve been texting guys [Dacus and Baker]saying, ‘I met Dave Grohl, and he exceeds all expectations of what a rock star can be in the world,'” the “Kyoto” singer said. “I think we, as a group, are really looking for that — like, who lives his life the way we want to grow old and live our lives?”
“He’s so game,” added Dacus, 28. “I just want to stay the way he is.”
The musicians recalled Grohl being asked to duet “Satanist” at the Hollywood Bowl, which Bridgers described as a “full-circle moment” for their proposed studio collaboration.

“There was this missed connection where Dave was actually going to come into the studio and play on [the record]. Then he slept through it or whatever, and we didn’t end up meeting,” Bridgers said. “So it was actually a perfect full-circle moment for him to play that song because we knew we wanted the drums to be crazy about it.”

For the Halloween performance, Grohl got into the spirit by painting his face in the shape of a skeleton, while Dacus, Baker and Bridgers performed in costumes as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
At the time, Grohl played the drums, which were raised on a platform behind the three singer-songwriters at the front of the stage. The ex-Nirvana drummer’s energy seemed to inspire bandmates who were smashing their guitars – so much so that Bridgers lost her halo and veil.
Last month, boygenius received six nominations for the upcoming 2024 Grammy Awards: Album of the Year and Best Alternative Album for recordrecord of the year, best rock song and best rock performance for “Not Strong Enough” as well as best alternative rock performance for “Cool About It”. record it also received a nod for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical.
