This summer has not been easy for Ree Drummond and her family.
In a post about her A pioneer blog, the Food Network star opened up about how her husband Ladd has had a very challenging few months on their family ranch in Pawhuska, Okla.
“Ladd had a … busy, somewhat difficult summer. I don’t think I ever say this [sic] years, but work, early mornings, relentless running, exhaustion… it was little,” she said.
(Ree issued a disclaimer that those were her words, not his, as Ladd would simply describe it as “that’s what he does and that’s part of life.”)
The work has hit her husband so hard this season that Ree has even questioned whether she should continue.
“A few weeks ago, after watching him limp around inside, covered in dust and blood after a particularly long day, I actually said the words, ‘I don’t think we can do this anymore.’ It was partly in jest, but maybe not a bit,” she said.

Ree Drummond reveals daughter Paige isn’t living at home while working on the ranch: She’s ‘one of the cowboys’
Ree added, “How much harder can you work, how much longer can you do this, are you okay, that’s what I was really thinking.”
In Ree’s blog post, which was actually a recap of her daughter Paige’s surprise engagement, Ree reflected on how the happy times in the Drummond family’s life make the hard times that much more bearable.
“So to see him smiling and walking around and enjoying the celebration of his second child and the man he’s going to marry … well, it made me feel a little better about things. 😂” she continued. “And the summer will end soon!”
On August 4, Paige (24) got engaged to her one-year boyfriend, David Andersen. The last time wedding bells rang at the Drummonds’ ranch, for the wedding of older daughter Alex, Ladd had a health scare.
Ree’s husband crashed his truck with his nephew Caleb while they were tackling a fire near the family farm. He broke his neck in two places, which is why he had to wear a brace at Alexa’s wedding.
These days, Ladd is helped on the ranch by Paige — she returned to work full-time in January.

During a June interview with PEOPLE, Ree said, “It’s really great to have my own home.”
“She actually lives in town,” Ree explained, “in a house that used to be my in-laws’ house. So in a way it’s nice that we still have that house, we didn’t sell it so she moved in and made it her own.”
Ladd’s father Chuck, also known as Pa-Pa, died in 2022, while his mother Nan died in 2018.
It’s not necessarily a permanent situation for Paige, Ree added. “As far as how long she’s going to stay or whether it’s going to be for the time of her life or forever, we’re not really trying to predict or think too far in advance,” Ree said. “I love that it’s here. She’s the first of our kids to really come back and work on the ranch full time.”
In May A pioneer in a blog post, Ree wrote that Paige “gets bumps, scrapes, bruises and bumps” at work. Despite the taxing nature of ranching, Paige is able to sustain herself, Ree told PEOPLE.
“She’s very strong, not just physically, but she has a pretty strong heart and personality, so it’s fun to watch her jump in and learn everything — not as a Ladd kid, but as one of the cowboys. Cowgirls, I would say,” she laughed.
