A PLANE has crashed in Brazil, killing all 61 people on board after it plummeted from the sky to the ground.

Shocking footage shows the craft spiraling down to earth earlier today before exploding in a huge fireball next to a house.

The plane crashed into the ground in a residential area of ​​the city of Vinhedo, Sao Paulo state, and locals filmed it falling and falling.

Locals approached the fiery wreckage on the ground and filmed the destroyed hull burning.

Bodies could be seen lying among the debris, but it is not yet clear what caused the accident.

A nearby house was also on fire while a helicopter was circling above.

Local news reports said the fire was out by 7:30pm UK time, 2:30pm EST, with firefighters working amid the smoking wreckage.

The tragedy occurred in the state of Sao Paulo today around 1:25 PM Brazilian time after the plane took off at noon.

Valinhos City Hall confirmed that everyone on board was dead and that none of the residents on the ground were injured or killed.

The Brazilian airline that operated the flight confirmed the accident in a statement to local media G1.

A statement from the airline company Voepass Linhas Aéreas confirmed that the plane took off with 61 people on board.

It was reported that four people were the crew, with 57 passengers.

Initial reports indicated that 62 people had died, after the flight was believed to have carried 58 passengers.

“The company regrets to inform that all 61 people on flight 2283 died on the spot,” Voepass said in a statement.

“At this time, Voepass is prioritizing the provision of unlimited assistance to the families of the victims and is working effectively with the authorities to determine the causes of the accident.”

Flight 2283 took off from Cascavel, Parana state, and was destined for the main international airport of the city of Sao Paulo – Guarulhos.

A statement from the airline said: “Voepass has taken all measures to support those involved.

“There is still no confirmation as to how the accident occurred or the current situation of the people on board.”

At an event in southern Brazil today, President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva asked the crowd to stand and observe a minute of silence.

He said all passengers and crew members appeared to have died, without saying how the information came about.

Firefighters, military police and civil defense sent teams to the crash site in Vinhed.

Local media reported that the type of plane is a turboprop ATR-72-500 from the French manufacturer ATR.

Flight-tracking site Flightradar24 said the plane was a 14-year-old model built in 2010.

More than 1,200 aircraft have been built since 1988, when they entered service.

The plane usually has a capacity of 72 passengers.
