Plane Passenger Says They 'Never' Put Their Phone on Airplane Mode — and Commenters Are Outraged

An airplane passenger has caused quite a stir after she revealed that she rarely puts her phone on airplane mode during the flight.

TikToker Isabella Sinis shared a video of herself sitting on a plane and admitted that she never switches her devices to airplane mode even when the flight attendant announces to passengers to do so before take-off.

“Does anyone put their phone on airplane mode? I never did, unless it was to charge my phone faster, but not casually on the plane,” she wrote in white text over the clip as she filmed herself with a confused expression on her face.

In the caption of the June 12 post, she added, “I could never be me.”

Users flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts on the divisive topic.

“As soon as I get on that plane, my phone is in airplane mode, hi,” one person commented, after which another echoed: “As soon as I hear ‘please make sure your electronics are in airplane mode,’ I immediately turn it on. ”

One user pointed out that flight attendants announce this “for a reason”, so the rule should always be followed.

Others pointed out that they did not want to be responsible for any consequences that might arise from not using the airplane mode.

“Girl, yes. If the plane goes down, it’s not because of me,” said one. Another added: “Yeah, too paranoid for that.”

One user asked Sinis for an explanation. “But why not? I doubt you’re getting service in the air, so what’s the point. You just risk interference,” they commented.

While most of the comments were in favor of the inclusion of in-flight mode, there were a few commenters who sided with the creators.

“Everyone said yes, but I thought it was normal not to,” wrote one. Another added: “I guess it’s just me and you.”

One person explained that they never turn it on because they didn’t think it would affect the pilot’s ability to communicate in flight.

“I haven’t since I learned that it doesn’t affect the plane at all. It only affects connections on the ground,” they wrote.

Interference on the ground from electronic devices used during flights is a real concern in the airline industry, according to CNN.

“5G wireless bandwidth spectrum is extremely close to reserved bandwidth spectrum for aircraft, which may cause interference to navigation systems near airports that assist in landing aircraft,” the April 2023 issue reported.

Although more research needs to be done to confirm whether 5G technology really has an impact on the ability of planes to land, the European Union is not so concerned about keeping devices in airplane mode.

“Technical data received from EU manufacturers do not offer convincing evidence for immediate safety concerns at this time. [European Union Aviation Safety Agency] is not aware of any operational incidents caused by 5G interference,” the organization told CNN in 2022.
