As another eventful year of exploration draws to a close, the latest celebration event will welcome the New Year in Pokémon GO. Pokémon GO is an augmented reality mobile game developed by Niantic and Nintendo as part of the Pokémon franchise. The New Year’s Event will take place from Saturday, December 31, 2022, at 8:00 p.m. to Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at 8:00 p.m. local time.
During the time of the New Year’s Event, Pokémon GO will be decked out in colorful decor like event-themed stickers that players can claim and festive fireworks that light up the sky. This year, the Pokémon GO New Year’s Event will also feature costumed Pokémon, a new avatar item and pose, plus many more exciting debuts. Players everywhere can anticipate many exciting event-themed features in the game as they roll in the start of 2023.
Pokémon Debuts and Spawns
As part of this year’s latest Pokémon GO event, new costumed Pokémon are set to appear. One of the Pokémon that players can expect to find is the elusive Party Top Hat Pikachu, which also has a chance of being caught by lucky players as a Shiny version. Starting with this event, players will also be able to evolve ‘Hoothoot wearing a New Year’s outfit’ into ‘Noctowl wearing a New Year’s outfit.’
As several of the Pokémon that appear during Pokémon GO’s latest event are expected to be in costume, there are also several types that will appear more frequently in the wild. The Pokémon that players can expect to encounter include Party Top hat Pikachu, New Year’s Outfit Hoothoot, and Party Hat Wurmple. Players who wish to collect these festive monsters can find them scattered throughout the land of Pokémon GO more frequently during the course of the event.
Eggs to Hatch
As is consistent with the themes of newness and rebirth celebrated during New Year’s, players are encouraged to hatch new Pokémon during the latest Pokémon GO event. As players grow their pocket monster collections this New Year, the following ten Pokémon will hatch from 7 Km Eggs: Party Hat Pichu, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Togepi, Tyrogue, Smoochum, Elekid, Magby, Azurill, and Wynaut. Players who get lucky also have a chance to hatch Shiny versions of these.
Bonuses and Challenges
Pokémon GO’s New Year’s Event provides players new bonuses during the event’s course. Due to these New Year bonuses, players are able to earn “1/2 Egg Hatch Distance when Eggs are placed in an Incubator during the event period” and “1/4 Hatch Distance for the first three Eggs hatched during this Pokémon GO event using the Egg hatching widget.” Although these bonuses encourage Pokémon trainers everywhere to hatch new pocket monsters, it is important for players to remember that these bonuses don’t stack.
In addition to the Egg-related bonuses offered in Pokémon GO, players can participate in Collection Challenges for the duration of the New Year’s 2023 Event. Although the details of this challenge haven’t been revealed beforehand, players can expect to see a New Year’s-themed Collection Challenge when they log in during the event. Players can then complete this Collection Challenge to receive a reward of Stardust.
Raids and the Featured Attack
During the course of the latest New Year’s Event in Pokémon GO, players will see that several Pokémon will be appearing in Raids. In 1-Star Raids, players can expect to see (potentially Shiny versions of) Party Hat Bulbasaur, Party Hat Charmander, Party Hat Squirtle, Party Top Hat Pikachu, New Years Hat Hoothoot. In 3-Star Raids, players can expect Party Hat Raticate, Party Hat Nidorino, Party Hat Gengar, and Party Hat Wobbuffet to make appearances (possibly as Shiny versions). 5-Star Raids will feature Reshiram and Mega-Raids will feature
Mega Steelix, and both have a potential to appear as Shiny versions.
As the New Year’s Event runs its course, a Featured Attack in Pokémon GO will also make its debut. Players will need to prepare themselves for the latest Featured Attack, Fusion Flare, which the Reshiram they encounter in raids during the event will now know. In Trainer Battles, Fusion Flare has 90 power, while in Gyms and Raids the attack has 140 power.
Field Research Tasks
During the Pokémon GO New Year’s 2023 Event, New Year’s–themed Field Research tasks will also be available for players to complete. Players who manage to complete the research tasks can earn Stardust. While these Research Tasks can only be viewed by players after the event’s launch, possible rewards (and their Pokémon GO Shiny odds) include Party Hat Bulbasaur, Party Hat Charmander, and Party Hat Squirtle.
New Avatar Item, Pose, and Stickers
For players who don’t think the rewards offered during the New Year’s Event are enough, they can take to Pokémon GO‘s in-game shop for even more goodies. Players can purchase the Pikachu Party Hat and Party Popper Pose for their avatar during or after the event while the items are available. Players will also be able to get New Year’s-themed stickers by spinning PokéStops, opening Gifts, or purchasing them from the in-game shop during the course of the 2023 New Year’s Event.
