Pooja Rani Bohra is an Indian boxer. Pooja is the first to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Pooja Rani Boora was born on Sunday, February 17, 1991, in Nimriwali village, Bhiwani district, Haryana (age 30 years; as of 2021). Her zodiac sign is Aquarius. She became interested in boxing as a teenager. However, it took her about a year to get into the Harvasingh Boxing Academy in Bhiwani. At first, she hid the incident from her father because she was afraid he would scold her. She often stayed away from home, hiding her injuries from her father. Speaking about it in an interview, she said,

If I get injured in training, I don’t go home so no one sees the injury or swelling. “

She further said,

My mom would lie to my dad and tell him I was studying at a friend’s house and I was spending the night at my coach’s house to help relieve the injury. “

When her father came to know about Pooja’s involvement in boxing, he scolded her and stopped her from taking boxing classes. When Pooja’s coach Sanjay Kumar Sheoran came to know about this, he visited her home and requested her father to allow her to participate in the competition. However, her father disagreed. It took Pooja about six months to convince her father to choose boxing as a career option.

Profession

Pooja started her boxing career in 2009. In 2009, she participated in the National Youth Boxing Championships and won a silver medal defeating Haryana’s top boxer Preeti Beniwal. Pooja later won a silver medal at the 2012 Asian Boxing Championships.

That same year, she won a silver medal at the Arafura Games in Australia. The victory helped her become one of the top contenders to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics. However, her defeat at the 2016 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships resulted in her being disqualified from the Olympics. Pooja also represented India in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. However, she lost the match to British boxer Savannah Marshall. In 2018, she participated in the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship, but was eliminated in the first round. In 2020, she defeated Pornipa Chuti in the women’s 75kg quarterfinals of the Asia-Oceania Olympic Qualifications and became the first Indian to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.
