Political career
In 2003, Poonam contested and won the assembly elections as a candidate against the then Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit from Gorai Market Assembly constituency. She served the BJP as spokesperson for 25 years. In November 2016, she changed her party from the Bharatiya Janata Party to the Australian People’s Party, claiming she had long been ignored by the party. In 2017, she changed her political party again from AAP to Indian National Congress.

In 2016, when Poonam left the BJP, she claimed that Arun Jaitley did not give her a chance to get a ticket for the assembly elections. Speaking at a media conference about her change of party, she said:

Facts/Trivia
- During the 2003 assembly polls, Poonam went to a polling station near Bangla Sahib Gurdwara to monitor voting, where she alleged that some Congress workers beat up BJP workers. When she stepped forward to end the argument, she was also attacked by congressional staff.
- Her husband Kirti had expressed doubts and attacked Finance Minister Arun Jaitley over the Delhi District Cricket Association (DDCA) issue. Kirti was accused of violating party discipline and was suspended from the BJP.
- In 2016, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia warmly welcomed Poonam when she joined and left the BJP. At a welcome press conference held in her honor, she gave her reasons for quitting the party. she says,
I see the future in AAP, especially the future of young people. The reason I quit the BJP is because of the mistreatment we received from Arun Jaitley. Despite his many promises, he did not give us the votes. Also, my husband Kirti Azad was suspended for speaking out against corruption. The BJP maintains a dual stance. “
- In 2017, Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken welcomed Poonam’s departure from the AAP to join the Congress party. She has a long-standing association with the Congress party as her father-in-law, Bhagwat Jha Azad, was the Congress party’s chief minister of Bihar. At a press conference, she elaborated on her reasons for leaving AAP, saying:
I came back to the party that fought for Indian independence. I don’t have any personal problems with AAP. However, there is a lack of organization. I don’t fit into their politics. I want to work with Congress and strengthen it. “
- In November 2021, she changed parties again and joined the All India Trinamool Congress Party with her husband. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee welcomed Poonam and her husband to the party.
- Poonam’s husband Kirti, a right-hand batsman and off-spinner, was part of India’s 1983 World Cup squad. The team also includes Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar and Sandeep Patil.
