Poor Things Director Shouts Out Birthday Buddy Bruce Springsteen as Movie Wins Best Comedy at Golden Globes

Poor people is the choice of the Golden Globes 2024 for the best film in a musical or comedy.

Air, American fiction, Barbie, The Holdovers and May December were also in competition in the category at Sunday’s awards ceremony.

During his acceptance speech, director Yorgos Lanthimos opened by giving a shout-out to a very special participant that he looked up to most of his life.

“I just wanted to talk to Bruce Springsteen all night,” said Lanthimos, 50. “We have the same birthday, Sept. 23. He’s been my hero since I was growing up.”

In addition to Springsteen, 74, the director expressed his gratitude for Poor people cast and crew, including acting winner Emma Stone, whom he called “the best.”

Poor people reunited Stone, 35, with Lanthimos, whom she previously worked on in 2018. Favoriteas Bella Baxter, a dead woman resurrected with the brain of a baby by a scientist played by Willem Dafoe.

Movie follows Bella as she relearns how to live in human society, travels the world with womanizing lawyer Mark Ruffalo, and grows into an advocate for women’s rights.

Stone, Dafoe (68) and Ruffalo (56) received acting nominations (with Stone winning!), while Lanthimos was nominated for best director. Poor people it also received accolades for Best Screenplay and Best Original Score.

Air reunited Ben Affleck with his longtime friend and collaborator Matt Damon for the biopic about basketball sneakers directed by Affleck, 51.

The film follows Nike executives in 1984 when they signed a contract with then-NBA rookie Michael Jordan and created the highly popular Air Jordan sneaker brand. The film also stars Viola Davis, Julius Tennon, Jason Bateman, Chris Messina, Marlon Wayans and Chris Tucker.

In addition to his best picture nomination, Damon, 53, also received a Golden Globe nomination for his performance as Nike CEO Sonny Vaccaro.

Director Cord Jefferson earned his own film American fiction nomination for best film with his first feature directorial effort.

The film is an adaptation of Percival Everett’s 2001 novel Deletionfollows a black writer named Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Jeffrey Wright), who is writing a novel by the title My pathology under a pseudonym that parodies books by other black American authors filled with racial stereotypes. Monk’s book unexpectedly becomes successful, leaving him to struggle with fame based on a fake persona.

Barbie entered Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony as the most nominated film, leading the way with nine nominations.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are nominated for their roles as Barbie and Ken, while director Greta Gerwig and her co-writer (and husband) Noah Baumbach are also nominated for direction and screenplay.

Three tunes from the top-grossing film of 2023 won Best Original Song, with Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” taking home the win — and the film also won the first cinematic achievement at the Globes.

The runaway hit featured a cast that included Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell and Simu Liu, among others.

The Holdovers had three nominations for Sunday’s ceremony: Paul Giamatti and costar Da’Vine Joy Randolph each received acting nominations on top of their best picture nominations, with Randolph, 37, and Giamatti, 56, winning.

The film follows teenager Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa) at a New England boarding school in 1970, who is left to spend the holidays at school with unpopular teacher Paul Hunham (Giamatti) and school cook Mary (Randolph). , who is grieving the death of her son in the Vietnam War.

Directed by Alexander Payne (Elections), the film revolves around the time Angus, Paul and Mary spend together over Christmas and New Year as the unlikely trio form a strange friendship.

May December Review PEOPLE: Julianne Moore and Natalie Portman face off in disturbing comedy

May December stars Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton received acting nominations for their roles in the Todd Haynes-directed film, in addition to a best picture nomination.

The film follows an actress named Elizabeth (Portman, 42) who visits married couple Gracie (Moore, 63) and Joe (Melton, 33) some 20 years after the couple made tabloid headlines – and Gracie was briefly imprisoned – because she has a child with Joe when he was 13.

Based on a screenplay by Samy Burch, the film is partially inspired by the real-life case of Mary Kay Letourneau, who was convicted of child rape and imprisoned from 1997 to 2004 after sexually abusing one of her students, Vili Fualaau. The couple later married in 2005 and divorced in 2017.

Barbie led the movie nominations with a total of nine, followed by Oppenheimer with eight and both Killers of the flower moon and Poor people with seven. On television, SuccessionThe final season also had a total of nine nominations, which follows Bear and Just the murders in the buildingboth with five nodes.
