Sadhvi Pragya or Pragya Singh Thakur was a Hindu nationalist and Indian politician. She is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She remains in the spotlight for her controversial comments. The Bharatiya Janata Party contested the 2019 general election against Congress leader Digvijaya Singh from the Bhopal Lok Sabha constituency.

Pragya Singh Thakur was born in 1971 in Binder, Madhya Pradesh, India (Age as of 2023: 53). She received her primary education in her village Lahar. Her father CP Thakur is a government employee and a “demonstrator” in the agriculture sector. Her father is also an Ayurveda doctor and owns a clinic in his village Lahaul. Her father is also an active member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). When she was in college, she was considered an excellent speaker. She joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS. She did her Masters in History from a college in Binder, Madhya Pradesh.

She is unmarried.

Profession

Under her father’s influence, she joined the RSS and became an active member of the RSS student organization ABVP. Savi also worked with Durga Vahini, the women’s organization of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP). However, she is known for her provocative speeches and as a star campaigner for the BJP. In the 2019 general election, she defeated Congress leader Digvijaya Singh from Bhopal Lok Sabha constituency.

  • She is the main accused in the 2006 Malegaon mosque blasts in which two bombs exploded in Maharashtra and one in Gujarat. About 6 people died and more than 100 people were injured. She was arrested and imprisoned for 9 years. However, she was acquitted in 2017.

  • Savi Pragya is also accused of murdering Sunil Joshi, a Bharatiya Janata Party MP who proposed to her in December 2007 but she refused. She was charged with responsibility for the accident and arrested along with seven others, but she was released in 2017.
  • She still appears in the media for her provocative statements. In 2018, she referred to Sonia Gandhi as an “Italian Vallibai” (maid from Italy) in a speech.
  • On April 19, 2019, she caused controversy during a press conference. She said that when she was arrested in the Malegaon bomb blast case, she told 26/11 Hero Hemant Karkare to leave her; as he had no evidence against her, but he refused. She then cursed Hemant Karkare, saying he would be destroyed, and remarkably, he was killed in the Mumbai terror attacks just two months later.

  • On May 1, 2019, she commented on the demolition of Babri Masjid saying: “We wiped a stain off the country. We went and demolished the structure. I feel very proud that God gave me this opportunity and that I was able to do To this point. We will ensure that a Ram temple is built at the site.” The election commission condemned her remarks and banned her from campaigning for 72 hours as she was seeking votes on religious grounds.
  • In May 2019, she made comments about Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi. She called Godes a patriot. Reacting to her comments, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he would never forgive Pragya Thakur for insulting Mahatma Gandhi. BJP president Amit Shah also asked her to clarify her comments within ten days.

  • In July 2019, she made a controversial statement on Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat mission. Talking to a BJP worker in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh, she said: “We were not elected to clean your drains, okay? We were not elected to clean your toilets, please understand. The job I was elected to do, I will be honest We must do it, I have said it before, and I will say it again.” This statement was severely criticized by senior cadres within the party.

  • Within days of joining the defense advisory committee, she was fired after she described Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse as a patriot during the November 2019 winter sessions.
  • In December 2022, she was booked in an FIR for delivering a provocative speech at an event in Shivamogga, Karnataka. Addressing specific communities, she said:

    There should be weapons at home, if nothing else, at least a sharp knife for cutting vegetables… I don’t know when something will happen… Everyone has the right to protect themselves. If someone sneaks into our house and attacks us, it’s our right to have a proper replay. ”

  • After deciding to remain celibate, her relationship with the saint became close. She lived in seclusion in Surat, Gujarat, and traveled around the country from there.

    I didn’t ask for votes before, and I don’t ask for votes now. Some of the words I used in my previous statement may have upset Prime Minister Modi and he said he would not forgive me. However, I have apologized to him. “
