Prannoy Roy is an Indian economist, journalist, psychologist, chartered accountant and author. He is considered one of the co-founders of New Delhi Television Limited (NDTV) along with his wife Radhika Roy. Prannoy Roy is the former Executive Co-Chairman of NDTV.

Prannoy Lal Roy was born on Saturday, October 15, 1949, in Kolkata (now Kolkata), West Bengal, India (age 73; as of 2022). He reportedly attended La Martiniere in Kolkata and then went to The Doon School in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. According to sources, he received an OPOS scholarship at Doon School to pursue A-level high school education at Haileybury and Imperial Services College in the UK. In 1973, he studied for a BSc (Hons) in Economics at Queen Mary University of London, graduating with first class distinction and a Queen Mary Award. Prannoy Roy became a Chartered Accountant in 1975 and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales, London, UK. He completed his PhD in Agricultural Economics from Delhi School of Economics in 1978 and taught there for one year. . In 1980-85, Prannoy reportedly became a consultant to PricewaterhouseCoopers (now PricewaterhouseCoopers), an international professional services brand operating as a partnership in India.

In 1988, Prannoy Roy and his wife Radhika Roy founded a production company called New Delhi Television Limited (NDTV). According to reports, Radhika Roy and Prannoy Roy are believed to be the founders of NDTV; however, Prannoy Roy claimed that Radhika was the original founder of the production house as he later joined the company. The company operates as a production house for news segments in partnership with public service broadcaster Doordarshan and International News Broadcasters.

According to sources, in 1997, Prannoy Roy was persuaded to shift his daily news program to another channel – Star TV. Later, he was appointed as the head of Star TV’s new 24-hour news channel. In 1998, Prannoy Roy signed a five-year content contract with Star TV for an annual fee of Rs 50 crore. The partnership with Star TV ended in 2003 and NDTV became an independent news broadcaster, launching two channels: English news channel NDTV 24×7 and Hindi news channel NDTV India.

On November 29, 2022, Prannoy Roy and his wife Radhika Roy resigned as directors of RRRPR Holding Private Limited (RRPRH) following the Adani Group’s open offer for New Delhi Television Limited (NDTV).

Fraud in Doordarshan upgrade
According to reports, in 1998, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a case against Prannoy Roy along with former Doordarshan director R Basu and five other senior Doordarshan officials for alleged fraud in Doordarshan upgradation. According to sources, the case went on for several years. In 2013, the court ruled that all defendants were acquitted because no evidence was found.

In 2017, India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided Prannoy Roy’s offices and residences (nearly four locations in Delhi and Dehradun), accusing him of defrauding banks. Prannoy Roy’s wife Radhika Roy is also said to be involved in the bank fraud case. According to reports, the two were booked under relevant sections of the International Criminal Court and the Prevention of Corruption Act for criminal conspiracy, fraud and criminal misconduct.

On April 30, 2015, Prannoy Roy received the Red Ink Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bombay Press Club for his sustained and pioneering contribution to news television and services to journalism. The award was presented at the Jamshed Baba Theater in the National Theater complex, Mumbai.
