Praveen Nath is an Indian transgender male bodybuilder. He is the first transgender bodybuilder from Kerala. He allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison on May 4, 2023, and was declared dead at the Government Medical College in Thrissur, Kerala.

According to some sources, Praveen Nath was born on Friday, May 30, 1997 (age 26; at the time of death) in Karingulam, Palakkad, Nemmara, Kerala, while some sources say that he was born on Saturday, May 30, 1998 (age 25 years; at time of death). His father’s name was Prabhakaran. He died when Praveen was a child. His mother’s name was Valsala. She was a daily wage worker and took care of Praveen and his siblings after her husband died. He has three older brothers: Pushpan, Vineeth and Anoop. On November 6, 2019, his brother Anoop passed away from long-term kidney disease; he was on dialysis.

When he spoke about his identity in an interview, he revealed that he was around 15 years old (10th standard) when he realized that he had a different identity within him. He added that he was not close with his brothers and that his mother lacked understanding of transgender people, before opening up to teachers at Yogini Matha Girls High School in Kolungode, Palakkad, Kerala, who Think Praveen is a lesbian because he is a lesbian. He was about 20 years old when he came out as transgender and was in college and suffered severe trolling and people began to isolate him; after being severely teased and harassed at his university, he was Termination of studies at NSS Nemala College, Palakkad, Kerala. Initially, his family did not accept his identity and he was forced to run away from home at the age of 20; he added that he was shocked by their decision. Later, he started living with some of the transgender community in Kerala, where a transgender woman, Sajna Shaji, took care of him. Some reports said he reconciled with his family a year after coming out. In 2018, he underwent gender confirmation surgery after feeling like he was trapped in a female body; his mother stayed with him while he was hospitalized for the surgery.

He stated in an interview that he was in a relationship in 2020 before meeting his wife, adding that he was in a bad state after breaking up with his partner; however, he did not identify this person. Later, he had a relationship with Rishana Ayshu. He met her at the 20th anniversary celebration (Idam) of ‘Sahayatrika’, an organization for the advancement of sexual minorities, in Trisur, Kerala, in November 2022.
In an interview, he revealed that he first met her while dancing at Idam’s closing DJ party. He fell in love with her at first sight and proposed to her that day. He added that she was surprised by his bluntness and told him to ask permission from her mother, Annama, who was in the transgender community. Her mother advised Praveen and Rishana to spend some time getting to know each other before getting into a serious relationship.

In 2020, he started working out and later turned his interest to bodybuilding. Later, he met Vinu Mohan, a former Mr. Kerala native of Palakkad, Kerala. Vinu agreed to become Praveen’s coach and help him prepare for the Mr Thrissur 2021 competition. He revealed in an interview that the organizer initially asked him to participate in the men’s group; later, he participated in the men’s group competition. However, Venu and Praveen convinced them to allow him to compete as a transgender; he won the title of Mr. Thrissur in the open category.
After his success in the Mr Thrissur competition, he and Vinu started preparations for the Mr Kerala competition 2021 in Kotayampala, Kerala. Venu convinced the Thrissur District Bodybuilding Association and the Kerala Bodybuilding Association to come up with an open (special) category for transgender people (transgender men). In August 2021, Praveen created history by becoming the first person from the transgender community in Kerala to win the title of Mr. Kerala in the special category. He made it to the final round of the International Health, Sports and Fitness Festival (IHFF) Mumbai 2022 bodybuilding competition.

Praveen Nath committed suicide on May 4, 2023. According to some sources, he took poison. On May 1, 2023, he shared a post on Facebook stating that he and his wife were about to separate; however, he deleted the post. Later, the couple were heavily trolled and abused on social media as multiple online outlets reported their separation. A day later, he shared a post on Facebook refuting the online media’s claims and clarifying that they were not living apart but living together; he added that he shared the post claiming they were separating after It was done when he was emotionally vulnerable. He lamented transphobic attitudes in the online community and criticized online media for spreading fake news and insulting his family.

Talking about his married life in an interview, he said that they are happy with each other and the problems they encounter are the ones that any ordinary couple would encounter, adding that they are working hard to solve them. According to reports, on May 4, 2023, he was found unconscious at home after taking poison. He was soon transferred to Government Medical College, Thrissur, Kerala; however, doctors were unable to save his life and he passed away. After Praveen’s death, Rishana shared a video on Facebook lambasting those who attacked him and spread fake news about their relationship, claiming that Praveen could not cope with the trauma and committed suicide.
Later, she attempted to commit suicide by taking poison and was taken to the Government Medical College, Thrissur, Kerala; however, doctors ended up saving her life. On May 6, 2023, while speaking to reporters about Praveen’s death, Pushpan (Praveen’s brother) claimed that Rishana physically assaulted his brother. He reportedly told the media that Praveen had visited them before his death and had some wounds on his forehead and neck; he further added that a week before the couple got married, Praveen died from torture attempted suicide. Pushpan accused Rishana of threatening to ruin Praveen’s bodybuilding career and pressuring Praveen to delete divorce posts he shared on Facebook; he said the family was legally objecting to Rishana.
