Pregnant Lindsay Hubbard Opens Up About Finding Happiness After Heartbreak: 'The Universe Had a Plan' (Exclusive)

Lindsay Hubbard certainly knows what a difference a year makes.

While the fireworks were falling on July 4, 2023, Summer house star was by her then-fiancé Carl Radke, and the two put aside the stress of planning their November nuptials and the conflict in their crumbling relationship to celebrate the holiday.

But as Bravo fans will tell you, a lot has changed since then.

In August of that year, Radke called off their “I dos”, leaving Hubbard heartbroken as the vision she had for her future vanished before her eyes. She got herself together and started a new business venture, found love again with her ex, sold her unused wedding dresses and on Independence Day this year, happily announced that she was pregnant with her first child, due this holiday season.

“It’s crazy for me to think about where I was this time last year,” Hubbard told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview about her happy news. “Looking back on it, it’s clear to me that the universe had a plan.”

“The journey is really crazy,” she adds. “Suddenly, for a girl who always wanted to be a mom, there I was at 37 years old, staring down the barrel of singlehood and wondering when my dreams of having a family would come true. And then this amazing man comes back into my life and the next thing is that I’m pregnant, ‘See? I feel like my prayers have been answered.’

Hubbard and her boyfriend – a biotech investment doctor who prefers to stay out of the public eye – had only been dating for a few months when she found out she was pregnant.

She remembers her period was two weeks late when she suspected something might be up and decided to buy the Clearblue Digital Early Pregnancy Test, which is more than 99% accurate from the day of her expected period.

“It immediately and unmistakably showed up with the words ‘You’re pregnant,’ and as shocking as it was, the really clear result just helped soften the unknown,” says Hubbard. “Those next steps are a little scary, but at least they’re easier if you know what you’re dealing with one way or another.”

From there, Hubbard went to her gynecologist for a blood test to test her human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) levels. The results arrived while she was on a plane to Mexico for her best friend’s wedding.

“My boyfriend wasn’t with me, so it was a bit difficult,” she recalls. “It’s not something you want to tell someone in a text message or a phone call, so I went through the wedding weekend and told him when I got back.”

Summer house viewers are well aware of Hubbard’s desire to have a child, and the former publicist even went through the egg freezing process for the Bravo cameras. But her boyfriend had those dreams too.

“Obviously it was a surprise and a shock at first because we weren’t trying or even planning on it, but we had some honest conversations and it was so good for both of us,” says Hubbard. “We have a very loving, caring and healthy relationship. I finally feel like I’ve met my match with him.”

“He’s so excited to be a dad and proud to have a baby with me,” she continues. “It means the world to me to have someone like him by my side. And yes, it’s a lot of pressure to be in a new relationship, but I think he’s the right man because we’re so bonded and connected and we communicate so effectively with each other that it didn’t feel like work.

“You know, I’ve almost made terrible mistakes in my past because of the biological clock that we as women naturally have, and this is the only time when everything seems so good.”

That doesn’t mean she doesn’t feel the fears that come with change.

“Oh, no one is ever really ready when they have their first child – my friends tell me that all the time, even the ones who have tried. It’s a learning curve!” Hubbard admits. “But again, the timing is right for me. Everything that has led to this point, I can draw on those experiences and I think they’ll help me be a better mom because of them.”

It was this belief in himself that helped Hubbard endure.

“I have to tell you, even with everything that happened last year, I never gave up on love and I never gave up on the idea of being a mom,” says Hubbard. “And that’s how I’ve always been: I’ve just never let the heartbreak of the past make me exhausted about these dreams that I’ve had. And that’s why I think the universe took care of me; because I always believed that it would happen.”
