Prince Louis Has a Fashionable Royal First on Christmas That Shows How Much He’s Grown

Prince Louis made a fashion statement on Christmas Day.

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s youngest child joined her parents and siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte for the royal family’s annual Christmas trip to church. The Prince and Princess of Wales family matched in blue and green outfits, while Louis’ tartan trousers tied the look together.

As well as earning style points, Prince Louis’ outfit showed just how much he’s grown. While the 5-year-old royal is known for sporting knee-length shorts (like last Christmas), since it’s a classic look for upper-class boys in Britain, Louis recently started wearing long pants. Earlier this month, Prince Louis wore one of his first pairs of trousers to his debut at Princess Kate’s annual Christmas concert.

Prince Louis wore his shorts and knee-highs with a blazer and tie for the first time last Easter, showing that his fashion has changed with age.

British children’s clothing designer Rachel Riley told PEOPLE: “This was the first time we’ve seen his little brother Louis wearing a blazer and tie in public, and the fact that the Princess of Wales chose sky blue instead of navy made the outfit more fun and older – appropriate. He also got along perfectly with his mother and sister, something he can still do as the youngest sibling.”

The blue and green tartan trousers could be the hand of Prince George. For a historic photo with Queen Elizabeth, then-Prince Charles and Prince William that was released in early 2020, George wore very similar tartan trousers. The photo was also taken around Christmas when the family gathered for their annual holiday lunch in 2019 before heading to Sandringham.

Before Prince Louis, his older brother Prince George was known for wearing shorts and knee highs combinations, even in winter.

The first time Prince George wore long trousers in public was in May 2018 at the wedding of his uncle Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. As page boy, George wore a miniature version of the Blues and Royals coat that Harry and Prince William wore for the ceremony.

The following year, Prince George turned more to long pants, including the traditional Christmas walk to church at Sandringham in 2019.

Princess Kate (41) is a big fan of tartan, especially during her visits to Scotland. She herself chose to wear the pattern at Christmas, including in 2018 when she was pregnant with Prince Louis and in 2013 in a blue and green Alexander McQueen combination.

The royal mom is also known for her love of upcycling outfits, so it’s no surprise that her children use each other’s hand-me-downs.
