Prince William Travels to France to Support Wales in Rugby World Cup — and Is Joined by Prince George!

Prince William is in France – and ready to watch a few runs with his son!

The Prince of Wales, 41, traveled to the Stade de Marseille to cheer on Wales in the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals as the team faced Argentina on Saturday, when he was joined by 10-year-old Prince George.

For the afternoon outing, the father-son duo wore identical navy suits and red ties.

In addition to his royal title as Prince of Wales, William is a long-standing patron of the Welsh Rugby Union.

Why Kate Middleton goes home with ‘bragging rights’ for Prince William after sports day (Exclusive)

This is Prince William’s second appearance at the Rugby World Cup 2023. Last month he appeared in France in the group stage match between Wales and Fiji, where the Welsh team came out on top 32-26.

Kate Middleton will also be in France this weekend — however, she did not come to the match with her husband and son. That’s because the pair support different nations when it comes to rugby.

While Prince William champions Wales, Princess Kate supports England as Patron of Rugby Football Union and Rugby League, which was given to her by Queen Elizabeth in 2022. (Prince Harry was previously a patron of English rugby before stepping back from his royal role and moving to California with his wife, Meghan Markle.)

Instead, the Princess of Wales will attend the match between England and Fiji on Sunday, which is also being played at the Stade de Marseille.

If the rugby teams of England and Wales were to go on and face each other in the final, it would go down in history. In the history of the Rugby World Cup, two United Kingdom teams have never reached the final round of the same tournament.

But Prince William and Princess Kate have already experienced cheering for different teams in the same game. In February, the pair got together for the Wales-England Six Nations rugby match at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. It was Kate who went home with bragging rights as England beat Wales 20-10.

Prince William, who became Prince of Wales after the death of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth in September, must divide his sporting allegiance among the nations of the United Kingdom. He remained diplomatic when asked if he would support England or Wales at last year’s World Cup, wishing both teams luck in the football tournament.

As president of the Football Association, Prince William is the boss of England’s football scene and is a passionate supporter of the team, famously taking Prince George to the European Championship final in July 2021.

“I support both. I support England more in football but Wales in rugby,” William said, according to Wales Online reporter Will Hayward. “When I was growing up, Wales didn’t go through to the tournament. Getting to the World Cup is a big thing, and I’ll be rooting for Wales through that process.”

The rugby rivalry isn’t the first time Prince William and Princess Kate have shown their competitive sides. The couple rarely turns down a face-to-face, whether they’re making cocktails, sailing in a charity race or playing table tennis.

On Thursday, the husband and wife showed their competitive sides at a mental fitness workshop organized by charity SportsAid, where they tried their hand at sports such as netball and goalball.

Goalball is a Paralympic sport for the visually impaired in which all players wear shades or blindfolds. Tactile lines are used to help players feel where they are, and the ball has an internal bell that allows players to hear where it is.

Both Prince William and Princess Kate wore glasses to take part in the penalty shootout.

Tim Lawler, CEO of SportsAid, exclusively told PEOPLE: “The prince took a shot and the keeper saved it, but the princess took the shot and scored, so the princess can brag!”
