Princess Mary and Prince Frederik of Denmark Step Out Together as Socialite Denies Affair with Future King

Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik were united on the same day that one society denied rumors of a romance with the future king.

On Tuesday evening, Princess Mary, 51, and Prince Frederik, 55, stepped out at the Glyptoteket museum in Copenhagen with Frederik’s mother Queen Margrethe and his aunt Princess Benedikte during Spain’s state visit to Denmark. The Danish royals hosted King Felipe and Queen Letizia for a three-day stay, and the group ended the second day with a tour of the “Joaquín Sorolla – Light in Motion” exhibition, followed by dinner.

Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik smiled as they arrived, with the future monarch placing a hand on his wife’s back as they entered the museum.

And in a subtle message, Crown Princess Mary added a necklace with the initial letter “F.” She has worn the piece of jewelery in a nod to her husband on several occasions, including at the coronation of King Charles in May.

The release came in the midst of gossip about the heir to the Danish throne. According to Hello!, romance rumors emerged after Spanish media published photos of Crown Prince Frederik with philanthropist, model and TV personality Geneveva Casanova during his private trip to Madrid. The media reported that the two toured the Picasso exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, walked in the park and dined together in the heart of the city. The trip reportedly came about because a mutual friend who was originally supposed to accompany Frederik around Madrid fell ill and asked Casanova, who is an expert on Picasso’s art, to go in his place.

Denying the buzz, Casanova said Hello!“I categorically deny statements suggesting a romantic relationship between Prince Frederick and myself. Any statement of this nature is not only completely untrue, but also a malicious misrepresentation of the facts. This is already in the hands of my lawyers, who will take appropriate steps to protect my right to honor, truth and privacy.”

Danish news site Dagens.com said Prince Frederik’s trip to Spain fell while his wife was in New York for United Nations Day. While the Danish royal house announced Princess Mary’s stay in New York from October 23-24, Prince Frederik’s trip to Spain was not.

Dagens.com reported that Casanova, who was born in Mexico and lives in Spain, previously had a royal romance of her own. The socialite was previously married to Cayetano Martínez, Olympic equestrian and current Duke of Arjona.

Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary celebrated 19 years of marriage in May, and were reunited for the first time through an unexpected meeting.

They met in a bar in Sydney, Australia in 2000, where Prince Frederik was visiting for the Summer Olympics. Mary Donaldson, an Australian advertising executive, found herself talking to “Fred” and immediately agreed.

“Something clicked,” Princess Mary later explained in a 2005 interview. “It wasn’t fireworks in the sky or anything like that, but there was a sense of excitement.”

Not long after that, Mary learned that she was talking to the Crown Prince of Denmark, the heir to the 1,000-year-old Danish throne.

“The first time we met, we shook hands,” she recalled of their introduction. “I didn’t know he was a Danish prince. Half an hour later someone came up to me and said, ‘Do you know who these people are?’ ”

The couple dated long-distance before getting engaged and married in Copenhagen Cathedral in 2004, and went on to have four children: Prince Christian, 18, Princess Isabella, 16, and 12-year-old twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.

As full-time working royals – and future King and Queen of Denmark – Frederik and Mary support Queen Margrethe and the Crown through royal engagements and many patronages.

As part of their royal duties, the crown couple greeted King Felipe, 55, and Queen Letizia, 51, at Copenhagen Airport at the start of their state visit on Monday. The couple have since played a key role in the household, from a glamorous state banquet at Christiansborg Palace to laying wreaths at the Citadel and stops at Copenhagen City Hall, the University of Copenhagen and the Danish Architecture Centre.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia’s trip to Denmark ended on Wednesday, and they participated in the tradition by writing in the guest book – and the window glass! — with Queen Margrethe at Fredensborg Palace.

“It is more than 160 years old tradition in the Danish royal house that the regent’s guests, if they are of princely rank or heads of state, sign on the window glass when they say goodbye after a state visit 🖋️,” the court wrote on Instagram, adding that the glass will now hang in a castle in North Zealand.

King Felipe and Queen Letizia’s state visit to Spain was the first in 43 years, since his parents King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia last visited in 1980.
