Puerto Rican Producer Tainy Still Hasn’t ‘Processed’ His Grammy Nom for Data: ‘I’m So Honored’ (Exclusive)

Tainy, a Puerto Rican producer, is still reeling from his Grammy nomination.

Speaking to PEOPLE at Spotify’s Best New Artist party in Los Angeles on Thursday, the producer talked about the Grammy nomination for his 2023 album. Data.

“It’s crazy. Everything has changed so much. When I started, this wasn’t in my power to make something happen because I’m from Puerto Rico,” says Tainy, 34. “What you would probably aim for would be the Latin Grammys, which is even a stretch.”

“To see how we grew and how we got here — I released my first album last year and I see it’s been recognized [at the Grammys], that’s just crazy. I don’t think I’ve fully processed it yet, but it’s a great honor,” he continues.

Bad Bunny, Julieta Venegas Join Tainy For Experimental ‘Lo Siento BB’ — ‘Together We Make Magic’

Tainy released Data in June 2023 and included collaborations with some of the biggest names in Latin music such as Bad Bunny, Myke Towers, Jhayco, Arcángel, Wisin & Yandel, Young Miko, J Balvin, Daddy Yankee, Rauw Alejandro, Feid, Julieta Venegas and more .

Although the collaboration led to a great album, Tainy says it was difficult to get everything done in time.

“Everyone is on tour, working on their albums [and have] busy schedules,” he says. “I had to travel a lot to get things done at a time when the record company needed me to get things done. So it was such a crazy, amazing, stressful, but just happy feeling to be a part of that journey. I loved every moment.”

Although Data —which was nominated for best música urbana album—featured several dream collaborations, Tainy hopes to one day work with Frank Ocean.

“I’m a big fan of Frank Ocean. That’s somebody I’d love to see what could happen in the studio, even if he doesn’t come out, even if he doesn’t do anything from that day forward,” he says. “But just to experience someone who inspires me so much would be really special.”

In 2021, Tainy included Bad Bunny and Venegas for “Lo Siento BB:/”, which was later featured on Data.

“Working with Tainy is always a pleasure. The world knows that when we get together we create magic,” the 29-year-old “Me Porto Bonito” singer said in a press release. “What’s so special about this song? The fact that I have the honor of sharing vocals on the same song with Julieta Venegas, something I couldn’t have imagined and that’s why I’m filled with so much emotion.”

“This song is a dream come true. It’s been a long journey to finally get around to releasing some of the work from my upcoming debut album and I don’t think there’s a better way to kick it off,” Tainy added. “I’m a huge fan of both of these artists and I’m so happy to be able to bring them into my creative space and create something really different that I haven’t heard before!”

At Thursday night’s Spotify event, all of the Best New Artist Grammy nominees, with the exception of Fred Again…, took the stage to perform. Other stars included Reneé Rapp, Kesha, Madison Beer, Sofia Reyes, Conan Gray, Damiano David and more.
