Q Lazzarus’ journey into the music business

Q Lazzarus’ date of birth is currently unavailable. Some sources suggest she was born in 1960, while others claim she was born in 1965. It is unclear how she got started in music or what she did before that. She founded her band Q Lazzarus and the Resurrection. During the 1980s, she made music while simultaneously working as a taxi driver to cover her monthly expenses. Her backing singers were Gloriana Galicia, Janice Bernstein and Mark Barrett, as well as songwriter William Garvey. In 1985, Galicia said Lazzarus worked as a housekeeper and au pair for a prominent businessman named Swan.

However, the band recorded their vocals at Swan’s house, and Lazzarus was working on other projects at the time. She was first rejected by record companies because of her dreadlocks, also known as Diane Luckey. But she got lucky when director Jonathan Demme got into her taxi. Luckey inquired about Demme’s musical interests and presented her demo tape, which Demme liked. Demme used her song Candle Goes Away in the 1986 action comedy romantic film Something Wild. The film and album received favorable critical reviews and was a box office triumph.

Luckey also appeared in Demme’s 1993 justice drama Philadelphia, singing a rendition of Talking Heads’ Heaven. The film, which was made on a budget of $26 million, grossed approximately $206 million at the box office and starred Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Jason Robards, Mary Steenburgen, Antonio Banderas and Joanne Woodward.

Q Lazarus

Luckey was never found when Q Lazzarus and Resurrection broke up in 1996. After years of speculation, Dazed discovered her in 2019 and revealed that she quit music and now works as a bus driver in Staten Island.
