QS Ranking 2024: IIT Bombay among the top 150 universities in the world

QS World Ranking 2024: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay achieved the top ranking as it secured 149th globally in the QS World University Rankings 2024. This is the first time in 8 years. Last year, an Indian higher education institution entered the top 150 list. IIT Bombay has shown an improvement in this year’s QS world rankings compared to last year’s place where it held 172.

Previously, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore achieved this feat in 2016 when it ranked 147th. IISc was India’s top institution last year, falling 70 places from 155 to 225 this year. It is currently the third highest ranked Indian institution.

There are a total of six Indian academies in the top 300 ranking, showcasing the country’s academic prowess. IIT Delhi comes in at 197th place, while IIT Kharagpur comes in at 271, followed by IIT Kanpur at 278th and IIT Madras at 285th.

The list has been volatile, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) falling 70 places, from 155 to 225. As a result, it currently holds third place among Indian institutions, a feat Significant change from its former position as India’s top ranked institution.

Indian Universities in QS World Ranking 2024

The QS World Rankings has the presence of 45 Indian universities, including 4 new universities: University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), Chitkara University, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and Statistics Institute of India this year. In addition, 13 Indian universities are ranked lower than in the previous version, while the same number is unchanged. Meanwhile, 15 institutions ranked higher this year, with academic reputation being an indicator that most institutions (28 out of 41, excluding new entries) improved.

QS ranking method: What are the changes in the QS 2024 ranking this year?

The rating agency has introduced three new parameters: sustainability, employment outcomes and international research networks, each with a weight of 5%. These additions are made to the six existing parameters. To accommodate the three new metrics, QS made adjustments according to the importance of the existing methodology. The weight for the academic reputation index has been reduced from 40% to 30%. Similarly, the emphasis on the teacher-student ratio has also been reduced from 15% to 10%, and the importance of the employer reputation metric has increased from 10% to 15%.
