Queen Camilla Is Taking a Break from Royal Duties After Busy Weeks Stepping Up for King Charles

Queen Camilla is taking some time off.

After an intense period helping to care for her husband, King Charles, amid his cancer diagnosis and appearing on his behalf on some royal outings, she is taking a break from royal duties this week.

The queen (76) regularly plans vacations at this time of year, palace sources told PEOPLE. One source says that this is a planned week of private time, which is usual for her at this time of year, and points out that it is not related to King Charles’ health.

Queen Camilla’s next planned royal engagement will be when she leads the family, in place of the monarch, at Westminster Abbey in London for the annual Commonwealth Day service on March 11. The king is expected to give a video address that will be played at the service.

Queen Camilla’s time off means three of the four senior royals are out of the public eye. King Charles, 75, has canceled most public duties as he undergoes cancer treatment, although he continues to work behind the scenes.

Meanwhile, Kate Middleton continues her recovery from abdominal surgery on January 16. The Princess of Wales, 42, became the subject of online speculation last week over her absence, but the palace reiterated that she is not expected to return to royal duties before Easter. A royal spokesman said Princess Kate was “doing well”.

Why haven’t we seen Kate Middleton since her abdominal surgery?

Prince William remains. The Prince of Wales, 41, returned to royal duties in February after taking time off to help his wife with her recovery and keep things as normal as possible for their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Last week the crown prince visited the Western Marble Arch Synagogue in London, the second of two recent trips to recognize the rise of anti-Semitism and human suffering in the Middle East, and spent St David’s Day with a series of engagements in Wales. The celebration included a glass of whiskey at The Turf pub in Wrexham with actor Rob McElhenney, who bought the Wrexham football team in 2021 with Ryan Reynolds, and a sweet visit to the school.

“It’s hard with Kate being sick too, but he’s going to step up,” a source close to the royal household previously told PEOPLE.

Other members of the royal family will fly the flag at the engagement. Prince Edward, who turns 60 on March 10, is expected outside as his wife Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, addresses a conference in Ukraine by video in support of his ongoing campaign against the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war. Investiture ceremonies are also held to reward members of the public for their work in the community.
