In 1998, he contested the first assembly election of the BJP but lost by 1,394 votes. In 2003, he contested the parliamentary elections from the BJP for the second time and became the MLA from Rewa constituency. He serves as Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Environment. On December 20, 2008, he was elected as a provincial councilor from the Rewa constituency and began his second term. He was appointed Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources until July 3, 2016. In 2013, he became MLA for the Rewa constituency for the third time and became Cabinet Minister for Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion. He also serves as Chairman of the Madhya Pradesh State Industrial Development Corporation. In 2018, he won election to the Lok Sabha defeating Congress candidate Abhay Mishra by a margin of 18,089 votes and began his fourth term as an MP. He served as Minister of Industry from July 3, 2016 to December 12, 2018. On August 26, 2023, he was elected as the provincial councilor for the Rewa constituency for the fifth time. He will serve as Minister of Public Health Engineering from August 26, 2023 to December 11, 2023. On December 11, 2023, he was appointed as the Deputy Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.

Losses caused by promises made during the campaign
In 2019, a notice was issued over the promises made by Rajendra during the 2013 assembly elections. Rajendra assured that he will allocate houses to the displaced persons in Rani Talab and Chuna Bhatta of Rathara and Rathari under the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Program (IHSDP) scheme. However, since the Corporation Commissioner did not provide any housing under the scheme, Rajendra distributed pamphlets about the scheme. This resulted in displaced families occupying the houses without depositing the required security deposit of Rs. 15,000. According to the notification, the Rewa Municipal Corporation suffered a financial loss of Rs 1,000 crore due to an informal agreement between the recipients and Rajendra. 494 Crores including interest of Rs. 153 Crore. The notice sought repayment and Corporation Commissioner Sabhajit Yadav also wrote to Sanjay Dubey, principal secretary, urban development and housing department, in this regard.

- Shukla has faced political hurdles in Madhya Pradesh, especially in competition with party colleague Abhay Mishra. Mishra left the BJP and contested as a Congress candidate but failed to defeat Shukla.
- While serving as energy minister in the Shivraj Singh Chouhan cabinet, Shukla played a crucial role in setting up the airport in Rewa and the country’s largest solar power project.
