Damani served as secretary of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee. Later, he was elected as the Vice-President of Himachal Pradesh Youth Congress and concurrently served as Secretary of AICC. He served as the convener of the technical cell of the National Students Union of India (NSUI). In 2007, he was elected to the State Legislative Assembly from Gumarwin constituency and later became a member of the Estimates and Human Development Committee. In 2012, he was re-elected to the State Legislative Assembly from the same constituency and was subsequently appointed as Chief Political Secretary. He resigned as chief political secretary in 2013 but later withdrew his resignation. He later resigned from the same position in 2014. He was defeated by BJP candidate Rajinder Garg in the 2017 Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections. In 2022, he was re-elected to the State Legislative Assembly from the same constituency and was nominated as Chairman, Human Development Committee and Public Member Accounts and E-Government cum General Purpose Committee.
