Charlie Puth Jokes He's 'Contractually Obligated to Release' a New Album Next Year

Ready or not, new music from Charlie Puth is coming.

The “Attention” singer, 33, who wrapped up an Asian tour last week, talked to fans in a recent Q&A about when they can expect his fourth studio album to arrive — and sooner than you think.

“The top of next year,” Puth said of when he will release the follow-up to his 2022 album. Charliejudging by the video shared on social networks.

He also seemed to mock the multi-year hiatuses he’s taken between full-length projects: “So not five years, not four years — next year.”

Whether or not Puth is ready to drop an album may not be relevant right now, as the “Left and Right” musician added that he’s “contractually obligated to release something next year.”

He clarified the statement in an Instagram Stories post on Dec. 23, writing, “Guys, it was a joke. I’m releasing this album because I’m really excited with what I’ve been working on… nobody’s pushing me.”

Last month, the star — who is married to wife Brooke Sansone — released a festive song, “December 25,” in honor of the holiday.

“I wrote and recorded ‘December 25th’ completely on a whim a few weeks ago in my studio while working on the new album,” he said in a statement at the time. “and even though it doesn’t sound anything like anything on the album, I figured why not share it for the holidays. So here you go…”

The song marked Puth’s second solo release of 2024. He released “Hero” in May after some encouragement from Taylor Swift in a line from the title track of her latest album, Department for tortured poets.

“You smoked and ate seven bars / We declared that Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist,” sang the 14-time Grammy winner.

Along with announcing “Hero” in May, Puth wrote a lengthy caption on Instagram about the track.

“My new song HERO is about when you see someone you love hurting, destroying the things in your life that are good, but you just can’t save them,” he said at the time. “It’s one of the hardest songs I’ve ever had to write, but I wrote it in the hopes that you’ve been through something similar in your life and that it can fill the Void for you like it did for me.”

“I’m really excited to share my next album with you, especially this song because it’s a great preview of what’s to come. I’ve never released a song like this before – it’s very different for me, but I want to thank @taylorswift for letting me know musically that I can’t keep this on my hard drive anymore,” Puth added of the “Cruel Summer” singer.

In an interview with PEOPLE, however, he said that “Hero” will not appear on his next album.
