In 1972, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh obtained a postgraduate degree in Geography from Gauhati University. In 1973, he chose to take up a position as a lecturer at Ideal College for Women, Imphal, Manipur. He taught at the college till 1984. In the same year, he was appointed Assistant Professor, Department of Earth Sciences, Manipur University. In 1985, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh was elected as the Vice Provost of the university. From 2004 to 2008, he served as the Provost of Manipur University. Rajkumar Ranjan Singh served as the Director of Academic Staff College and Director of College Development, UGC, Manipur University until his retirement in 2012. In 2013, Ranjan Singh joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and started his political career. In 2014, he contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as a BJP candidate for the Inner Manipur seat but lost; however, in 2019, he tried his luck again and won the second Lok Sabha elections. On September 13, 2019, he was sworn in as a member of the Standing Committee on Science and Technology, Environment and Forests. From October 9, 2019, he was elected as a member of the Rules Committee and a member of the Advisory Committee and was in charge of the Ministry of Development of the Northeastern Region. In June 2021, in the second Modi cabinet reshuffle, he was given the charge of state education and foreign affairs.
