Career

Shortey was first elected to the Senate in 2010. During his campaigns, he strongly supported family values. There was a vacancy in the 44th Senate District (incumbent Sen. Debbe Leftwich, embroiled in a misconduct investigation, decided not to run for re-election). Shortey finished second among four candidates in the first Republican primary in July 2010, with just under 38 percent of the vote. She won a runoff in the Republican primary the following month, defeating James Davenport, co-owner of a martial arts studio and former chief of staff, for the county seat; Shortey received 58 percent of the vote while Davenport received 42 percent of the vote. She defeated Democratic candidate Randy Rose, a retired Oklahoma City firefighter, in the November general election. Shortey received 57% of the vote, while Rose received 43%.

She was re-elected in 2014, defeating his Democratic opponent, attorney Michael Brooks-Jimenez. Shortey received 52% of the vote, while Brooks-Jimenez received 42%. After Shortey’s resignation, Brooks ran in a special election to fill the vacancy in 2017 and received 54 percent of the vote.

Shortey was publicly chastised in February 2017 for trying to overturn Oklahoma voter approval of relaxed state drug laws in November 2016.
