“I loved it,” he said. “My mom is a dance teacher and my grandma was a dancer, my sister is a dancer, so I’ve always been around it, but there’s a big difference between being around it and having to do it.”

As for the singing, he joked that it involves “a lot of auto-tune.”

Chalamet told PEOPLE on the red carpet that he also had to learn how to “live and love the tone” of the film.

“I realized everything I worked on [has had a] down-to-earth seriousness, and here I got to relax and play, like in high school, but I hadn’t worked in 10 years or so. So it was a learning curve,” he said. “But when it was in full swing, that’s when it felt like we were cooking.’ ”

The film serves as a prequel to Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, with Chalamet as Willy Wonka.

“I think what’s so remarkable about his performance is not only that he’s funny and mischievous and quite mysterious as well — just like the Willy Wonka that people will know — but also, he brings so much heart to the role and he’s brilliant an actor,” King said.

The director also told PEOPLE that fans can expect to see Willy Wonka’s “energy” shine through during the musical numbers.

“We’re trying to evoke that through these kinds of dance sequences there. And there’s some really big numbers, and there’s an amazing kind of zero-gravity set piece [and] some really nice numbers,” he said.
