Ramachandran Ramesh is an Indian chess grandmaster. In 2002 he won the British Championship and in 2007 he won the Commonwealth Championship. He is famous for his commentary at the 2013 World Chess Championship. He is known by the nicknames “RB Ramesh” and “Master Master”.

Ramesh started playing chess at the age of 12, inspired by the success of Indian chess player Viswanathan Anand. During his career as a professional chess player, he held several titles, including FIDE Master (FM) in 1995 and International Master (IM) in 1996. He was also a member of the Indian chess team in 1996. As a professional chess player, he has won many chess championships, such as the 2002 British Championship and the 2007 Commonwealth Championship. In 2004, he became the Grandmaster title awarded to chess players by FIDE, the world chess organization. His world ranking is 1218.
In 1998, Ramesh started teaching chess to young students and helped them win championships. According to him, Aarti Ramaswamy was his first student. At the age of 22, Ramesh was invited by the All India Chess Federation (AICF) to accompany the Indian youth team to the Asian Youth Championship in Iran. Ramesh’s wife Aarthee is also a member of the team. After returning home, Aarthee’s parents asked Ramesh to help Aarthie practice chess because there was no formal chess coach or mentor at that time. They played chess together for a year. Later, Aarthie won the World Under-18 Championship, which set the stage for him. Winning a lot of media attention and bringing in many new young players to look to Ramesh for guidance. After that, he began working privately with many players at home. According to him, 90% of the players he worked with were initially recognized as chess players, which further inspired him to start teaching chess professionally and become a mentor.
In 2008, he quit his job at Indian Oil Corporation and took a break from his career to start Chess Gurukul, a chess academy in T. Nagar, Chennai. Chess Gurukul has since produced many Indian chess world champions such as R Praggnanandhaa and Bharath Subramaniyam, who achieved the title of International Master in 2019 at the age of 11 years and 8 months. At the 2015 World Youth Championship, India won five gold medals with all the winners of the Gurukul Chess Academy.
Ramesh came to international attention for his official commentary at the 2013 Anand vs. Carlsen World Chess Championship (co-starring Susan Polgar).
