Ramakant Achrekar was born on December 5, 1932, in a Maratha family in the village of Malwan in the state of Maharashtra, British India (age 86; time of death). He was affectionately known as “Baba” by his close family and friends. When Akhileka was 11 years old, she came to Mumbai (now Mumbai) with her parents. Achrekar went to Chabildas High School in Dadar West and it was there that he started taking interest in cricket.

Ramakant Achrekar played his first official cricket match in 1943; while he was studying at Chhabir Das High School in Dadar. In 1945, he started playing for New Hind Sports Club and Young Maharashtra XI. Akhilekar, a batsman-wicketkeeper, played only one first-class match – for All India State Bank against Hyderabad in 1964; he scored 30 runs. He began coaching in 1967-68. Initially, he worked in nets at New Hind and another club Sassanian, and later, he founded another club Kamat Memorial at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. Later, he trained many international players including Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Chandrakant Pandit, Lachhand Rajput, Sachin Tendulkar, Vinod Kambli, Pravin Amre, Sameer Dighe, Ajit Agarkar, Paras Mhambrey, Ramesh Powar who represented India in Tests and many others.
