Ramesh Bais is an Indian politician who has served as a member of Parliament seven times, representing the Raipur constituency of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is a former member of the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly. He has served as the Governor of Tripura (2019 to 2021) and the Governor of Jharkhand (2021 to 2023). On February 12, 2023, he was appointed as the 23rd Governor of Maharashtra.

In 1980, he won the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election from the Mandir Hasod constituency on the ticket of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Bais was appointed as the 18th Governor of Tripura on July 29, 2019, after being denied contestation in the 17th Lok Sabha elections in the 2019 BJP elections from Raipur constituency. He holds this position until July 13, 2021.
He succeeded Droupadi Murmu as the Governor of Jharkhand and was appointed as the 10th Governor of Jharkhand on July 14, 2021, for a period till February 12, 2023.
On February 12, 2023, he was appointed by the President of India as the 23rd Governor of Maharashtra following the resignation of former Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

Comment on violence against women
In 2013, the opposition in the BJP was offended and protested after Ramesh Bais spoke about the Kanker rape case, which involved a government-run residential school in Kanker district of Chhattisgarh of minor prisoners and said:
While raping an adult woman/girl is understandable, raping a minor is a heinous crime and the perpetrator should be hanged. “
Later, some BJP officials defended Ramesh and said he was not justifying crimes against adult women or girls and that his words had been misinterpreted. Commenting on this, Shailesh Nitin Trivedi of the Indian National Congress said,
Attacking anyone is a heinous crime. (Bais’s) statement is offensive and we condemn it. ”
