Acid Attack Survival Stories
On October 5, 2006, Rangoli was attacked with acid by Avinash Sharma and Prem Singh. Avinash, who hails from his hometown, is a rangoli-obsessed lover, while Prem, a welder, is an accomplice in Avinash’s crimes. They threw acid on her at her rented residence in Rispana Colony, Dehradun. She was taken to hospital and underwent 57 surgeries. She had to have skin removed from her thigh and a graft done. Even after receiving the best medical treatment in the country, she lost one ear, 90 percent of the vision in one eye, and breast dysfunction. Her sister Kangana supported her throughout her journey and took care of her when other members of her family were unable to. In an interview, she described how her life was struggling due to severe damage to her food and windpipe. The physical pain was one thing, but the mental trauma she faced was immense. Her parents faint every time they see her. After the attack, the man her parents chose to be engaged to left her. She hasn’t looked in the mirror for three months. Her parents would often lose their temper over what would happen to her, who would marry her, etc. In December 2017, Dehradun police arrested the main accused and his associates in the case.
