Ranjan is a businessman and bureaucrat with a strong background and political roots. He is known as “Ranjan Da” by his famous people. On December 28, 1959, he was born into a healthy family of doctors. He was born in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, India, but hails from Patna, India. By caste, he is a Bengali Brahmin Hindu.

Both his father and mother are doctors. In 1976, while in college, he fell in love with Namita Bhattacharya (adopted daughter of Atal Bihari Vajpayee) and won the heart of Atal Ji. He married Namita in 1983 for seven years.

He lost his parents at a very young age, so when he met Atal Ji, he became his father. He started calling him “Baapji” as Namita did. He was devastated when his adoptive father Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away on August 16, 2018, at AIIMS Hospital in Delhi.

Profession

He attended St. Edward’s School in Shimla, St. Columb’s School in Delhi and St. Michael’s High School in Patna. He subsequently attended Shri Ram College of Commerce in Delhi and received an honors degree in economics in 1979. He also completed a diploma course in hotel management from the Oberoi Institute of Hotel Management in 1981.

At the age of 24, he started working with the Oberoi Group and became the General Manager of the Oberoi Palace Hotel in Srinagar. In 1987, he quit his job at Oberoi’s to become an entrepreneur. He opened his own hotel in Manali under the banner of Orchid Resorts Private Limited. In 1993, he sold his hotel to Raj Chopra (Chairman and Managing Director of Competent Automobiles).

In 1996, just 13 days after Atal Ji took office as Prime Minister, Ranjan was appointed as OSD (Official on Special Duty) in the Prime Minister’s Office. This became a life-changing event, after which Ranjan became prominent in politics.
